It’s normal for some people to just spend hours there.

was at a Starbucks earlier today. They had some military spouse women's group or something going on and they took up a lot of seats and were just hanging out not drinking or eating much of anything the whole time I was there.

That's true in that Starbucks itself, on the corporate level, did nothing wrong, and ethically wasn't obligated to do anything more than fire the guy.

That doesn't do anything to prove your other assertions, though.

They most certainly were not obligated to fire the guy. In fact, given that he was unfairly fired for simply carrying out the corporate policy I truly hope he does sue and win. What the corporation is now doing might be textbook PR moves but their actions wrt that employee are just dispicable.

Starbucks pretty much has to throw him under the bus. If they don't it could cost them a lot of money for appearing to condone/accept his behavior. Kind of like "Good Morning Vietnam" when the head honchos liked the DJ but they still had to get rid of him.

It isn't corporate policy, I actually worked there.

To be fair though even within a company certain areas can have "house" rules.

I've never seen a Starbucks in South Florida that had a bathroom lock on the door that you needed a code for until this story broke.

And it has been reported that the manager said they had an anti-loitering rule for that store which of course is stupid if you don't enforce against everyone but instead pick and choose who you want to harass.

That seems like a rule that goes against Starbucks’ actual policies. Creating an environment where people spend as much time as possible is a major idea that they push. The only time I ever saw anyone kicked out was when some kids came in and screamed at the top of their lungs as a prank.

There are some with bathroom locks here. Almost all of which are downtown or other areas with high levels of homeless folks.

Still, it's more than a token response. They are taking this seriously - for whatever reason. (Probably mostly PR.)

yes, the reason is PR AKA CYA (Cover Your Ass) like any large corporation does when they are called out for their employees acting a fool. We do this in the army all the time - make a big show about giving a shit then we forget about it in a month. It's SOP for the most part.

Desperate Starbucks Now Pleading For People To Masturbate, Use Drugs In Its Restrooms

SEATTLE, WA—In an effort to restore the company’s battered image in the wake of recent controversies, desperate Starbucks officials openly begged Monday for people to masturbate and use drugs in the coffee shop chain’s restrooms. “Please, just come in and do whatever the hell you want in the bathroom—feel free to shoot up or whack off—we’ll give you the code, no questions asked,” said Starbucks spokesperson Haley Drage, clarifying that, if a customer wished to stimulate their genitalia to the point of orgasm or snort a line of cocaine elsewhere in the store, they were also more than welcome to do so among the tables, while waiting in line, or behind the service counter. “We implore customers to just visit our locations. You don’t even have to buy anything; in fact, if you can provide proof you’ve masturbated or taken drugs in one of our stores, you can visit the counter for a free tall beverage of your choice. Come on, please just do this for us. Please?” At press time, the manager of a Starbucks in Phoenix, AZ had reportedly called the police on a black customer after he failed to masturbate or do any drugs within the first five minutes of his visit.

Costa Coffee is my masturbatory caffeine-based outlet of choice, not that I'm typically in the mood for coffee either before or after a bout of self-abuse.

Now get me in a branch of Subway and I'll show you a footlong with meatballs.
