Goodbye Stan Stan Lee, the man who co-created Marvel Comics, has died ... Stan's daughter tells TMZ. We're told an ambulance rushed to Lee's Hollywood Hills home early Monday morning and he was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. We're told that's where he died. Lee had suffered several illnesses over the last year or so -- he had a bout of pneumoniaand vision issues. Stan started Marvel with Jack Kirby in 1961 with The Fantastic Four. He went on to create Spider-Man, Black Panther, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Iron Man and The Avengers. Stan made cameo appearances in all of the Marvel movies. Lee had a rocky relationship with Marvel once the company went full-tilt Hollywood. He sued the company in 2002 for royalties he said he was owed for the first "Spider-Man" movie. Three years later he settled the case for $10 million. Lee is survived by his daughter, J.C. His wife of 69 years, also named Joan, died in 2017. J.C. tells TMZ, "My father loved all of his fans. He was the greatest, most decent man." Lee was 95. RIP
He was looking particularly frail in his recent videos. Never a Marvel fan as a child so he doesn't mean as much to me as he might others, but I did used to enjoy his cameos.
Just as I'm going out the door to see "The Girl In The Spider's Web", I get hit in the gut with this baseball bat.
I believe that shooting is entirely finished, including reshoots. So if he filmed a cameo it's in the can already. I gather from just reading Variety than he may have died from a heart attack or similar.
Damn. Imma going to reload my Spider-Man save on the PS4 for the diner scene. That was a damn near perfect cameo for him, especially getting another chance to diss the "let's split up Pete and MJ" stuff that started with One More Day. Excelsior! And his one goes all the way to transwarp.
He was there pretty much at the beginning (Timely Comics in 1939!), and he outlived everyone. His professional life is the hitherto history of the superhero comic book industry. I know there are controversies about how much or exactly what Lee's contributions were for this invention or that, but it's undeniable that he was central to the creation of many of Marvel's great characters, and his decisions shaped the Marvel universe as we know it. A true giant has passed.
I grew up with DC and wasn’t a fan of Marvel until the 90s Animated Spider-Man and X-Men. That being said, obviously the MCU has been a success and the early Spider-Man and X-Men movies hold a special place in my heart and none of that could have been possible without Stan Lee. Godspeed my good man may you Rest In Peace. I now leave you with my personal favorite cameo and the first time I became aware of who he was.
All the celebrity dedications so far. https://www.superherohype.com/news/427247-excelsior-hollywood-reacts-to-stan-lee-death
Stan Lee was a great guy who brought us many universes of stories and entertainment. His work showed some of our greatest characteristics, and an understanding of how hate and pain warp a person. We are lucky to see the visions of our world through his art. So many people have been inspired and contribute because of his influence. I really like that he was able to hear and see his fan's praise.
I've been buying some old Marvel stuff lately, even as a fan, the amount that Stan contributed to the hobby is staggering when you really start to add it all up. The comics bullpen in the sky has its general manager now. Thanks Stan.
PS4 Spider-Man DLC drops on 23rd Nov, I kinda hope they might have had enough time to add a small tribute to him, even just in the credits. Though if there's any unused vocals they could fit in, since they have his game avatar...
