The hysteria is strong in the young generation. In 30 years, they'll see how duped they were, just like we were 30 years ago.
Hey, if this is going to be a thing, we need an "OK, Boomer" emoji! A combination of and Someone with Photoshop skills get on this!
Gee, where have I seen this hysteria before? Also, what kind of handle is "Kamala Harris is a cop"? Is that suppose to be a putdown of some kind?
Penn, BTW, takes the threat of global warming serious enough that he’s been buying electric cars for about 10 years now.
That is one of the dumber denialist talking points which has been debunked over and over again. Yes, in the 1970’s journalism majors with absolutely no scientific background misquoted actual scientists to publish non scientific scare piece in the popular press (mostly bullshit in things like Time Magazine with the same author writing pieces for various newspapers) but none, not a single published scientific paper on a supposed new coming ice age. To compare, even in the 1970’s there were several hundred pieces written by actual scientists in actual peer reviewed scientific publications about the link to human generated CO2 and climate change. So why not focus on what scientists actually said and not pop culture writers? Oh, because it doesn’t suit the denialist memes, that’s why.
I actually think that there is a fundamental problem with human reaction to dangers they really cannot perceive, or that they do not think will hit them. The climate deniers tend to be older and it seems as people get older they seem to fall out of environmental concern. I do not think it is a mystery because the older you get the more you have survived and seen humans overcome things, and the closer you are to it never effecting you in this lifetime. My 6th grade science teacher told us we would not be driving cars now because gas would run out. This was also the years where gas lines occurred because of shortages in gasoline. He was wrong, but people were in the middle of a gas shortage which turned out to be wrong. But that also seems to be when a large chunk of people moved on to commuter cars with smaller engines. If you don't put doom and gloom in there people, in general, tend to overlook danger. So there is the temptation to lie to get people to do something immediately. The problem becomes that when you make up doomsday and it does not come people go back to lazy. Look at the food industry and the medical problems we know come from bad eating. Maybe we need evolution where humans who actually think about environmental issues survive while the lazy who the hell cares people die before they get to breed?
Anna went nuts on that last neg rep even neg repping a factually true statement. Maybe she should start reading shot before she beg reps it? That may be too much to ask though.
Tererun is right about evolution and basic human nature. "Out of sight out of mind" is hard to overcome! 20,000 years ago (for example) humans had to really, really, really focus on what the hell might kill or cripple them within the next minute, and find safe food within a timely manner because those that didn't ended up sooner versus later. Maybe in their down time they wondered about those glaciers getting closer or further away or the animals getting gradually scarcer or the weather getting hotter or colder but it wasn't tangible and quantifiable in their world. And if they did realize it and plan ahead accordingly they only had to convince their small tribe - not billions of people in our very connected world today. Whether mankind caused or not, climates change is inevitable and nature doesn't give two shits which species adapt and which don't - it's been that way since life began and that will be going on long after our species is gone.
Nature may take it's time, and we have little idea what will happen in the grand scheme of things, but it has consequences, and it does not care if we survive or not.
As you well know spellchecker is the problem. You type “neg rep” and Apple doesn’t like “neg” so it changes it to something like Meg or keg. “Shit” gets changed to shot.
30 years ago people were telling you positive shit like we'd be on Mars or have jetpacks or robot housemaids or you could download orgasms. Now science had to die for your sins and has to fess up to the kids "we really fucked this up, it's not gonna be good". As a scientist, fuck you for making me have to say that. You were meant to trust the guys with the lab coats and specs. But nooooo you liked the fossil fuels. Yeaaahhhh let's burn us some dead dinosaurs. And now if we ever get robot housemaids, they won't be servicing our sexual needs while we enjoy a Martian sunrise. They'll be uploading a ZIP file of evidence to the sexual harassment tribunal that, if we're lucky, might not conclude before the melting ice shelf floods the courtroom.
Yeah, and somehow even Dayton who struggled* with quote tags for 20 years could spell and even Ted Wolf who was legitimately dyslexic has gotten decent enough to figure out spelling at TBBS. I've typed out a 10,000 word fic almost entirely on my Note 8 and used Grammarly to spell check the damn thing before I published it. You lazy shit.
no species will outlast life itself - granted the bible may say otherwise but whatever! Humans aren't special just because we have the capacity to think that we are. There are a lot of mammal species that are better parents/society members and are more responsible & dependable than some humans - how pathetic is that? We can't even get the basics of survival right let alone the complex issues. We can do algebra but we can't count how many babies we left the house with and we leave them in a hot car.
