Some of his podcasts are good. He allows people to give full answers and he's not constantly interrupting like some hosts do.

I used to.
When he had on Neil DeGrasse Tyson and the guy from Bad Astronomy to debunk the conspiracy shit he used to believe in.

But now he's all in on the conspiracies again, and he's a transphobe to boot, so fuck him.

He saw that the anti-SJW/incel audience was big bucks, and sold out.
Fuck every single no-integrity fucker that does that.

I've seen a few of his youtube discussion episodes. I'm mainly familiar with him as a UFC live event commentator at which he excels. He's the best & most experienced commentator that isn't an actual active fighter or retired fighter.

I'm listening to the latest Dr. Rhonda Patrick one right now. She apparently isn't very familiar with "sciatica" and doesn't know how to pronounce it. But it's generally mildly entertaining background noise, often about random topics I don't otherwise hear much about.

I've listened to a couple of his podcasts, the Sanders one. The one with Elon Musk, any time NdGT is on (I will watch/listen to anything with Neil on it). He seems like a pretty laid back interviewer, and he's almost someone I could like except for his transphobic comments, and his tendency to give in to really overdone conspiracies.

Sciatica is pretty fascinating! I never heard about it until a guy at work told me all about it. He got it from dead lifting many years ago - just a routine work out and he lost focus for a fraction of a second and POW! now he has a lifetime of pain to deal with.

I love when him and dave rubin go for who can be most right wingnut without tripping themselves up on their faux woke points. On one hand they both are trying to go all in on the incel insanity, and on the other they are trying to keep the few liberals who still listen to them so they have to throw in some pretend reason.

This is why I prefer the silver gerbil Glen Beck. He is a wing nut but occasionally he forgets to be a complete scumbag and has a moment. He is sort of like that crazy televangelist from the 700 club who would be ranting about satan and republican bullshit, but then all of a sudden say be kind to trannies and smoke a joint. I think his name was pat robertson. You know some sort of alternate universe consciousness is breaking into their stream of thought and tossing a marble or two in there to see if their audience is actually paying attention.

According to Wikipedia, he was a full contact Karate/Tae Kwon Do fighter. Given his age, I gather he was past his prime by the time MMA started getting big.

he was always more of a very enthusiastic fan of/believer in MMA than a professional level fighter. He knows his limitations. That's why he's great as a commentator - he's never lost the pure love of the sport. I think he worked his first UFC fights for free because he loves it so much. Daniel Cormier was a "double champ" holding belts simultaneously in two weight divisions recently and still hasn't retired from the UFC and he's right around 40 years old. But he's 100 percent a total fan boy the second he takes that seat as a commentator. Like Joe Rogan, he's like a 14 year old kid watching his heroes for the first time, every time he takes that commentator's seat. Even a UFC event with a weak card becomes a big deal when those two are in the chairs. Even not paired up each guy still brings a lot of excitement to any event. They are pumped up for the lowest level prelim fighter all the way up the card to the main event.



Joe is a big kettlebell and chin up bar enthusiast so that's pretty cool. Short, hard simple workouts that don't overtax your ability to recover - I can't disagree with that attitude!

I have a pretty low opinion of the whole MMA schtick. I really get fed up with the fanboys running their mouths about how MMA 'proves' traditional martial arts aren't any good....ah...don't get me started...

traditional martial artists are good...at their particular martial art. If they are the karate champion of the world then I'm sure the best boxer in the world couldn't beat them beat them in a karate match.
It works this way with any martial art, or even any sport really. MMA has now evolved into it's own art which is of course "mixed" meaning being a specialist (wrestling, kickboxing, karate, etc) means nothing. The fighters truly need to be able to deal with any style of fighter. A kickboxer may not be great at wrestling (for example) but they at least need to know how to defend against a wrestler. They need to know how to stuff a takedown so they can keep the fight on the feet where the kickboxer can have an advantage.

That said the original idea of MMA was to find out which martial art was "the best" in a realistic fighting situation. 25 years later they have the answer...none of them are "the best". Any martial artist who only adheres to one single art will....100 percent of the time so far....will get their ass handed to them and it won't be pretty.

China is not happy about this! For years they touted their Kung-Fu as the greatest thing since sliced bread, a source of national pride and superiority. Yeah they could do all kinds of gee-whiz choreographed displays and tricks. Then the curtain was pulled back and Kung-Fu champions were allowed to practice their art on western boxers, wrestlers, grapplers, etc. under MMA rules.
Yowza what a train wreck that was! Pure embarrassing devastation. Now the situation is China is reluctantly allowing western MMA fighters in to train Kung-Fu fighters in MMA.

The UFC now has their first ever Asian champion, Chinese female strawweight Zhang Weili (see pic). Granted there may be Chinese champions fighting in Asia based fighting organizations like the Singapore based ONE Championship or maybe even Bellator here in the U.S. but in the big leagues of the UFC there aren't many Asian fighters of either gender so an Asian champion is a very big deal.

Dagestan is producing some great fighters in the UFC with of course much support and encouragement from Russia. Khabib Nurmegomedov for example is the undefeated lightweight champ and nobody has found any holes in his (mostly) wrestling game yet. Zabit Magomedsharipov (looks just like Abe Lincoln!) is another Dagestani fighter on the rise.

The problem with MMA is that it has...rules....to be fair most other martial arts have rules as well. Watch an olympic Tae Kwon do match and figure out how long they would last against a boxer...but the rules are rigged to show off their kicks. That's the main reason my art doesn't do traditional sparring and very few practitioners have had any real success in MMA. You fight how you're trained and if you train to stay within the MMA rulebook you're going to be at a big disadvantage on the street.

We actually have had this argument here before. With @Talkahuano IIRC and her martial arts skill that I forgot what it was.

Fighting on a mat in a big open space, following rules, wearing special clothing, AND paired against someone of equal size and skill will not work on the street to protect you from someone that wants to do you harm.

In a crowded street area you may not be able to do those fancy kicks and punches.

And that applies to me as well. I went through defensive training in a big open gym against a person roughly my size and height. But I've had to use force against someone in a tiny jail cell who was naked, sweating, and covered in his own feces and you quickly learn that those fancy moves you learned on an open gym mat are not very useful.

Some of it is useful but really the most important part is being able to hold an inmate so cuffs can be applied.

And no I'm not saying martial arts skills aren't any good. Just that most of it isn't very useful for actual self protection on the street and what is useful depends on the person using it and the person it's being used against. It's one thing to punch a "Karen" and another thing to punch some drunk ass motherfucker twice your size whose trying to curb stomp you because you bumped into him.

I think it also depends on your goal. I think the best use of martial arts on the street is to get out of the fight and away. Going into a cell with a prisoner is a much different goal where you have to use different skills. An MMA fighter would seem to have a different strategy than a martial artist going for points for landing blows. The strategies would be different because the scoring and path to victory are different.

Hand to hand combat competitions are interesting because you can vary the style of fighting and point gathering. On the street it is not about the points, but your goal in the conflict.

Rogan’s podcasts are hit or miss. Even if the guest is someone I find interesting, listening to three hours of casual, unscripted chit-chat is not necessarily entertaining. It’s best for background noise while I perform another task.

Some martial arts might have "point fighting" but MMA does not. True there are judges and people keeping track of significant strikes and takedowns, but sometimes judges are terrible so every fighter wants a finish win by submission, knock out or doctor stoppage. And a doctor stoppage generally only comes when your opponent is bleeding so badly it won't stop or blood is in their eyes and they can't see. Broken bones won't stop a fight unless a fighter can't stand up anymore. Plenty of fighters have won fights with a broken arm, nose, orbital, or foot or hand.

As for martial arts being useful on the street it totally depends on the type of martial art and who is teaching it. If your martial art doesn't involve you getting punched and kicked repeatedly it's worthless.
Like Mike Tyson said, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. That's why in most cases the most useful martial art against the average guy on the street is boxing.
Get out of the fight and get away really should be your goal! Boxing does that with extreme brevity.

I don't teach people to fight. I teach them to counter an attack and do enough to get away. Big difference. Trying to teach someone (like me) who is 60+ to trade punches with someone half their age and twice their size is a great way to get somebody seriously hurt and/or killed.
