I grew up thinking that. A strange thing happens. In areas where prejudice is common your allies and safe places are stronger, but in areas where there is more diversity you have more opportunity. That does not mean the prejudice is not there in cities, because it is, but rather there are more people around of your type. When trouble comes allies are more likely to look away in a liberal area IMO. When I say allies I mean people who would normally be accepting and open to your presence.

    Yes.

2.2 million uncounted votes, though, so it may be a day or two before results are final. Don't know if it'll be enough for Biden, though if early voting elsewhere is any indication it could be.

Future might not be as dour as you think.

“Why I would grit my teeth and vote for Trump, Alexander Downer, Australian, Columnist”

“There's no perfect choice, but President Donald Trump has not been bad for our national interest – and would be better for the next four years than Joe Biden, who is well past his prime.”

    Nov 1, 2020

Of course, he lives in a former penal colony, so there's that.

I still think Biden ends up winning, but with all the ridiculous drama and posturing Trump promised us and narrow enough that our national nightmare is doomed to continue. We won't make it to Christmas without Trump vowing to run again in 2024.

He and his enablers needed a solid curb-stomping and it doesn't seem to be happening.

Let 'em rant. As long as they stop terrorizing and maiming people in the meantime. Although I think they'll find some changes in the meantime. :bailey:

that's not the point. Biden will probably win by about 6 (52-46 or some such) and the point, the absolute tragedy, the indicator that the country is in deep deep distress, is that 46% among us are so fucking craven that they could survey the last 4 years all in all and say "I'm good with this"

Some measure of that is god-damned ignorance on the part of people who only get their news from Fox (or worse) but some measure of this is people who can look evil in the eye and say "my wallet is fat and he hates all the same people I do so I don't need to live in a free country necessarily"

Downer is a former leader of our conservative party, part of a rich family (at least as old as it gets here) that keeps parachuting its family members into government, and was a loud voice this year that Covid-19 should just be treated like the flu. That he likes Trump isn't surprising one bit.

South Australia was never a penal colony. :async:

a four year pause - if that - in the disintegration of the Republic is cold comfort. I'll be watching to see what the final margins are, there might be encouraging news if Texas ends up being 2 points or whatever, but a close race doesn't repudiate any of the evil and that worries me.

At this point it looks like Trump will win Texas by close to 6.

someone on Twitter said that the Dems need to figure out how to appeal to the Latino vote and, with respect, I'm sorry but if you can be latino and watch the last four years of Republican xenophobia and say "I'm fine with that" then I don't know what outreach you are looking for
(apart from being terrified of "socialism" and so bottomlessly clueless as to not recognize that nothing like that which you fled will ever exist in this country - swapping a socialist totalitarian for a fascist autocrat is not really trading up)

This is looking closer than it should be, but as I've seen it mentioned elsewhere if Arizona ends up being what tips it over the line and Trump barely loses it because he spent years slagging off McCain it will be kinda funny.

Eh, repudiating evil isn't really America's style. America tends to just shrug and move on without actually punishing anyone who perpetrated the evil. :clyde:

The problem, if I'm allowed to say this as a white voter, is that there really isn't any "Latino" vote. There are so many subcategories that they have to either be addressed individually or folded into the "Democratic voter" without regard to culture.

Oh I'm aware of that, but even Mexicans don't vote Dem the way that blacks do and I can only assume that's because of that concept in the Chris Ladd column I linked yesterday: recognize that whites dominate "people of color" so it's better to "be white" and ally with the oppressors than be among those who have to fight against them.

It's not just Mexicans under the Latinx banner....that includes Cubans who reject any hint of support for socialism, PR which is somewhat split and the other South American nationalities. It's too bad we don't have any Latinx folks like TKO or Crisis here to weigh in thanks to the racists who ran them off. :garamet:

There's somewhat more homogenized voting among American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS, or the majority of American black voters), because all all cultural norms were long ago stripped away. Everything we do, we do for survival.
