Going forward, I see two options for Media Central: 1. Remove all moderation and "Red Room" rules apply; or 2. Permaban assholes like @The Ghost of Crazy Horse who consistently -- consistently -- bring up bigoted, hateful bullshit to justify their so-called "criticism" of a particular film or television show. Case in point from earlier today: https://wordforge.net/index.php?posts/3295197/ One only needs to browse through the over 200 pages of the Star Trek Discovery thread to see my point.
That's kind of thin, at least in the example you linked. A lot of media works these days are putting concerns of gender, race, or other such ahead of story, character, and plot. Look at HBO's Lovecraft Country to see such things done properly, and something like Marvel's attempted relaunch of the New Warriors to see where it's done completely wrong. I can't comment on Discovery specifically as I gave up on that hot mess after the first season.
You just proved my point, vis-a-vis Lovecraft Country. I don't disagree that Hollywood is purposefully and finally trying to be more inclusive (with mixed results) but that sort of discussion is more Red Room material versus Media Central, Press Start, etc.
Disagree. It's perfectly reasonable to discuss media topics in Media Central. You just can't do the usual Wordforge shit slinging in there. Sadly, you'd have to discuss the matter on its merits instead of tossing ad hominem around.
reasonable, yes... an ongoing stream of thread derailing bullshit on the other hand? I mean, it's not like he offers any constructive or even original critique... I'd say it's Daytonesque but I'd be doing a disservice to Dayton.
I'd say it's pretty goddamned Dayton-esque, in that he doesn't take on anyone else's arguments. You explain (with evidence from the shows!!) why his point isn't valid....he just regurgitates it again next week, and next week, and next week, like he's a Zelda cartridge with a used up save-battery. Reset-reset-reset-reset. Forever.
Sometimes, there's a fine line between legitimate criticism and trolling. One person's long-overdue inclusiveness can be another person's "woke bullshit." Can we talk about Scarlett Johansson in the lead role in Ghost in the Shell in the MC? Or Emma Stone as a person with Chinese ancestry in Aloha? I see both sides of those--"it's inappropriate" and "it's perfectly fine"--as being perfectly legitimate positions that can be argued reasonably and productively. The problem arises when someone it starts getting personal. You can always either ignore TGoCH or try to engage him in actual discussion. But don't be the first to lob ad hominems.
that presumes an equivalent weighting... Is it inclusive, sure... "overdue" isn't a concern for me. More like it got with the 21st century and caught up to the past 20 years of SF. We could, but it's a totally different topic of "whitewashing" vs. "relevance". I see where you're going and the parallel illustrated, but suspect that if we look at the discussions of those things from the time they were current, we won't find the vitriol. Consider Idris Elba playing a Norse god in Thor... it disturbed the fuck out of reactionary racists, but those of us with some degree of expertise on the subject could accept that even in the source material Heimdall is described as both "golden" and "bronze". Ignore feature is futile and engaging him in actual discussion, well... "dayton-esque", remember?
While I think most people recognize that as a fairly offensive example, a person could still argue that it's a product of its time and wasn't seen as quite so odious then as it does now. What I'm getting at: a person in the MC should be able to discuss anything related to film, TV, etc., as long as they do it in a fairly respectful way. Even if they have an unpopular opinion--Mickey Rooney's portrayal of a Japanese in Breakfast at Tiffany's is comedy gold and no one should be offended by it--they should be permitted to argue it.
and if they brought a unique of novel perspective, great. You can defend why you don't find that offensive or ScarJo in the Shell as culturally appropriative. but three seasons plus the lead up to the premiere of the same shit that he's already been suspended for? nope... board breaking
He doesn't like "nuTrek". We get it. But he literally shits up every thread he posts in in Media Central and, as you've pointed out, it's been going on for years. He has nothing constructive to offer other than the same tired schtick that started with the first season of Discovery.
Despite the regular teasing he receives, we all recognize that Federal Farmer is a physically mature adult with a post-secondary education and no mental disabilities or illnesses. And yet, week after week he posts the same dog-whistley complaints. Over. And. Over. No matter how often or how effectively his complaints are rebutted. Is that trolling? Is that spamming? Is that race baiting? Call it what you will, but it's not a sincere attempt to discuss anything in good faith.
I think we can all agree that the childish tantrum that would result from @The Ghost of Crazy Horse being banned from Media Central is the childish tantrum Wordforge deserves to witness
well yes.. he pauses from posting thinly veiled racist/sexist whines to whine that he isn't a racist and respects women. but it's generally only one or the other.
I think the best punishment here is grounding and taking away his screen privileges, as with any prepubescent child.
I often disagree with FF's positions, but he's not stopping discussion happening, and if you want him permabanned from WF you have the tools to do that for your own experience through the ignore function.
Nonsense. He may not stop discussions, but he certainly derails them with frustrating consistency. The 200+ page Discovery thread could probably be whittled down to about 150 pages (or less) if you take away the bigotry and completely inappropriate behaviour coming from FF. Dayton was banned for pretty much the exact same behaviour.
we've been over this... forcing folks to use ignore as a measure against such prolific trolling literally breaks the board by making threads unfollowable. Seeing the SNW thread and what continued to happen with that.... great modding :/
You’ve had a personal vendetta against me for years. I don’t know why, other than you’re just an asshole, but this is just you lashing out because you don’t like me and want me banned. I would love to see you banned, but you constantly walk up to the line and you know it. Don’t pretend you’re innocent in this because you’re not.
What do you hope to accomplish with all the critical posts you put in the DSC and other new Trek threads? It's not like you're going to change anyone's mind and it's not like anyone is going to change yours. I don't care about disagreements, but people are sick of the flaming and sniping from both sides. @Bickendan @Dr. Krieg
I was hoping to get some sort of discussion about the show other than people just saying how much they love it. That didn't happen. Some actual moderation would be nice since WAB, Dicky and Ten get to basically do or say what they want.
