I think Trump never really gave deep thought * to the fact that Mitch, Nancy, and pretty much everybody in DC has been "playing the game" for a long, long time and will still be there after he leaves.
I honestly feel that it might be a while before a DC "outsider" from either party runs for the office of HMIC again.

I suspect that that slide is not all due to people being aghast at his inciting the Capitol mob to insurrection, though that is obviously part of it. But I would be willing to bet that part of it is the far right turning against him for throwing them under the bus in order to try to appear innocent in the attack. I'm not sure that the extreme-right is going to diminish in any way in the coming years (Trump has emboldened them and made them almost "mainstream" for 4 years now), but I'm guessing that for a large part of that movement, he will no longer be their darling and their idol.

I imagine some Republicans who reflexively said they approved out of tribalism are (a) thinking "this idiot cost us the Senate," and (b) remembering that they didn't actually like him all that much in the first place.

This is something that @oldfella1962 and @Paladin really need to think about reading.
