Yep, you had the original, the 90's reboot with Malcolm McDowell, the 2020 Blumhouse movie, and now they're doing it again with a female descendant of Mr. Rourke played by Roselyn Sanchez. CHUDS- "Why does Ms. Roarke have to be Latina!?!?....oh....right... " https://www.cbr.com/fox-fantasy-island-roselyn-sanchez-elena-roarke/
To be honest, the "descendant of Mr. Rourke" thing kind of traps them but I recall an episode of the original that implied Roarke was God (or an agent thereof) when the Devil (the delicious Malcolm McDowell) tried to get over on him. If you ran with that you'd free up the casting some. I say that because I want a Roarke with a certain attitude and I'm unaware of (or not recalling) a Latina who has that certain something. I can't exactly describe the thing I mean but it's basically John DeLancie, or Alan Tudyk, or Mchael Emerson in Lost or his newer show...a sort of veiled smart-assness but not a total obvious asshole. I can think of some women who could do that (Tg Nutaro obviously) but if there's a Latina cut from that cloth I'm not remembering
No, no. You'll address the "CHUDS" in this one by blaming them for its disgraceful failure at every level.
At the risk of stereotyping, it seems to me that saucy smart-assedness should be right in the typical Lztina actress's wheelhouse. And after all, it is ACTING. Even if it's not a natural fit, I don't see why there would be difficulty finding an actor or actress who could pull it off. I would think that Rosario Dawson could hypothetically pull off the intelligent, whimsical, just a bit of a jerk type that I think you are trying to invoke.
Just saying I'm not AWARE of one with that persona in any of her roles. I'm not in a position to say one can't be found. Hell, in a sense Georgiou was such a personality (the Emperor) so I certainly don't mean it as a reference to any particular ethnicity being better at it (or worse)
You are correct, but it should be noted (though it's not shown in this clip) that the soul Roarke was saving belonged to Adam West. I mean, Adam West was cool and all that, but the whole reason they were in this situation was that the woman playing Adam West's wife had sold her soul to save Adam, and when she couldn't meet the terms of the bargain (because she also had to give Satan some live flowers out of season), she and Adam went to Fantasy Island for help. I just can't see offering up one's soul to save Adam West, you know?
We'll have to wait & see this NU-Fantasy Island when it comes on the air to truly determine its quality or the lack thereof. I think Roselyn Sanchez is great casting as Elena Roarke. Someone upthread suggested Peter Dinklage for this NU-FI. Not sure if that poster was serious or not, but having Dinklage play Tattoo's successor would work out great. Each episode beginning with Peter Dinklage's character ringing the bell & chanting "The plane! THE PLANE!!!!!!!" would be a great way to continue Tattoo's work on FI.
OTOH, the visuals make it look like "The Bachelor in Paradise" or some shit - hope they lean into WTF stories that are Twilight Zone/Dark Mirror twisty and not just... a modern day love boat conceit about relationships
