@Bailey and @Order2Chaos are manifestly better informed on this issue than I am. However, it really doesn't take much of a trip down the rabbit hole to find huge amounts of information that will at the very least cast doubt on the wisdom of returning to the gold standard, not the least of which is the threat of having the value of one nation's currency by others. Here's some research that leads down the gold standard rabbit hole. Warren Buffett is also not a fan of the yellow stuff, but if anyone wants to know more there's plenty out there. In the interest of being "fair and balanced" I'll reference gold bug Peter Schiff, who has been trying to make a living off a lucky call of the 2008 crash. Anyone who's followed his recommendations since then has lost their ass.
What is the most important thing to know about the Gold Standard is the fact that it's rarely explained as bringing any benefits outside of locking government options more firmly into the type of economic policies its supporters support.
I’m sorry, but you must have me confused with someone else, I didn’t vote for Trump.
You believe that Trumpism is something that changing from represents "coming to one's senses" but then state you favour Libertarianism, which is just another form of delusional madness. You want to get the party off meth and on to crack.

Liberalism is even worse.

"Liberalism"? seems a bit vague other than supposedly being the antithesis of whatever the fuck libertarianism is supposed to mean to your mind.
Federal Farmer I am glad to hear you are reconsidering some things and I hope it isn’t temporary. If you’d like to try and get some balanced opinions below are some podcasts I think could be a good starting place (as in aren’t hyper partisan or far left). I’d start with the Bulwark; it is moderate right. Hacks on Tap is one R operative and one D operative. Politics War Room is moderate left. https://www.thebulwark.com/podcast/the-bulwark-podcast/ https://www.hacksontap.com/about https://politicon.com/podcast-title/politics-war-room-with-james-carville-and-al-hunt/ I listen to all three (along with some more liberal ones) to ensure I get a range of opinions. Edit: Also, if you’d like some good ‘straight news’: Short ones: FT News Briefing The World in Brief from the Economist The Intelligence from the Economist Politico Daily Playbook Longer: The World BBC Newshour PBS Newshour The Daily from The NY Times
I’m not really aware of what exactly the current republicans stand for apart from hating women, hating homos, hating minorities, thinking they are above the law, not so sneakily supporting Putin’s war, becoming Foxnews famous and not reinvesting tax dollars into their crumbling country. Like what are their policies to improve quality of life for the taxpayer?? Let’s be honest - thanks to them America isn’t even close to being the freest country in the world Would probably be a good idea if they got back to actual governing that helps its citizens rather than engaging in attacks on the country’s principles and its people Just an idea
Liberalism is even worse.
What are you defining as liberalism? I remember you saying that the US should adopt some of the policies that Sweden or Finland have, so it can't be just left leaning policies.
The future of the Republican Party would appear at this point to be self-destruction. As the radical fringe consumes the party, they will fall to fighting over idealogical purity. It’s likely the party will become much smaller and intense as it falls ever farther into fascist idiocy. One can only hope that the Democrats will finally pull their heads out of their asses and take effective actions.
No. For fuck's sake, this shouldn't even need explaining. The GOP stormed the capitol with the intent of murdering lawmakers because they lost an election. The Democrats are infighting over how Biden should respond to the GOP deeming women 2nd class citizens. Jesus Christ, THINK before you flap your fucking gums.

Given what seems to be your most common trigger these days, I'm guessing this is about the fact that most Democrats don't fly into a spiral of butthole-clenching angst at the reminder that trans people exist.
This is part of why it is hard to take you seriously. You operate on Feels not Facts. Name a single a single radical in Dem Party leadership in the House or Senate. Name a single radical that is chair of a major House committee. How many are even ON major House committees? Same questions for in the Senate with the notable exception of Sanders (even though technically not a Dem, that is a distinction without a difference). If you were paying attention you know one of the main points of contention between leadership and the newer more progressive members is that the Dems base committee assignments and leadership on seniority. They also don’t have the term limits on committee assignments/leadership that the Republicans do. This creates its own issues in that newer members feel locked out and a bunch of old fossils hang on past their prime but it also means there is no mechanism for radicals to take over the top of the party.
See my above comment. AOC and the Squad have no power. Just because Fox News has hyped them up to scare the rubes in no way means they have any power much less have ‘taken over’ the party. Name a single legislative ‘win’ of AOC and the Squad over the moderates and/or leadership. Because I can think of a whole hell of Ls, Infrastructure over Build Back Better being one of the biggest.
I give you paragraphs of facts, you post five words of feels. And yet you will claim no one wants to discuss things with you. Step back from reflexively defending your position and actually consider the facts I shared with you.
Also, while you are stepping back and reflecting on your position consider why your knee jerk reaction to someone pointing out the insanity/nihilism of the modern Republican Party (in a thread you started about said Party) is to try and deflect to talking about Dems?
Ah yes, AOC. The Democrat so radical that her proposed tax structure involves a top marginal rate that's ... lower than it was under that notorious socialist Dwight Eisenhower.
A day in the Life of Sue Republican. Sue gets up at 6 a.m. and fills her coffeepot with water to prepare her morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With her first swallow of coffee, she takes her daily medication. Her medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of her medications are paid for by her employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Sue gets it too. She prepares her morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Sue's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. In the shower, Sue reaches for her shampoo. Her bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for her right to know what she was putting on her body and how much it contained. Sue dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air she breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. She walks to the subway station for her government-subsidized ride to work. It saves her considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Sue begins her work day. She has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Sue's employer pays these standards because Sue's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Sue is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, she'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think she should lose her home because of her temporary misfortune. It's noon and Sue needs to make a bank deposit so she can pay some bills. Sue's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Sue's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression. Sue has to pay her Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and her below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Sue and the government would be better off if she was educated and earned more money over her lifetime. Sue is home from work. She plans to visit her father this evening at his farm home in the country. She gets in her car for the drive. Her car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. She arrives at her childhood home. Her generation was the third to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. She is happy to see her father, who is now retired. Her father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Sue wouldn't have to. Sue gets back in her car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Sue enjoys throughout her day. Sue agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm self-made and believe everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."
