Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles was arrested on suspicion of murder Wednesday evening in the fatal stabbing of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German, whose investigation of the politician contributed to his primary election loss in June. The stunning development came a day after Las Vegas police asked for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in the case. An early morning search of Telles’ home on Wednesday provided the first indication that the Friday killing might be related to German’s work exposing public wrongdoing. The investigative reporter was pursuing a potential follow-up story about Telles in the weeks before he was killed. https://www.reviewjournal.com/crime...official-in-reporters-stabbing-death-2635486/
Evidently they arrested him because they found his DNA at the murder scene. https://www.npr.org/2022/09/08/1121818059/las-vegas-journalist-stabbing-arrest-found-dna
A couple podcasts I listen to (focus on preserving American democracy/norms - so attacks on the free press are top of mind) have mentioned this. 1) Stabbing is personal. Especially the multiple thrusts into the same area. A real assassin will hit each lung first (yelling requires airflow) and then heart. Not Random. 2) Don’t over analyze/apply to nation as a whole. It isn’t just a stereotype. This area is ‘special’. Dude used to be in charge of Clark County. Which has a large influence on various licenses (including gambling) for cities like Las Vegas that are in Clark County. There are some not nice people that he probably worked with that are upset about him not handing out licenses. 3) All that said. We do need to make sure our reporters are protected. Hopefully this is a Las Vegas/mob issue but the killing of reporters reporting on government corruption is definitely a warning sign. Better safe than sorry.
Re: bolded Reminds me of the story I read about Christopher Lee and Peter Jackson during filming of Return of the King. Jackson apparently wanted Lee to scream after being impaled to kill off Saruman, but Lee said no, because he had been special ops in WW2, knifing Nazis in the back, and knew from personal experience that they couldn't scream from said knifings.
A politician killing a journalist who exposed the politicians shady deals... I'm sure i've seen a similar plot in one of those crime shows...
