A good thing to have done, but pretty meaningless unless the records are expunged too. When was the last time someone was federally prosecuted for simple possession?
If there are a lot of violent marijuana dealers, you can thank Nancy. There's no reason for them to be if that's all they dealt. Criminalization is what breeds the violence. Look up Prohibition. Then they are bounced for the parole violation of the violent crime, not for the weed. It won't impact them at all. Honestly man, are you high right now?
Isn't that what pardons do, officially remove the pardoned crimes from your record? That's what they do in Canada, as I understand it. I know a guy that got one just so he could pass criminal records checks and such.
The more I look at this move the weaker it gets. The news is saying there is no one who is on the books solely for possession so this has a net 0 effect. Yes, there are around 6500 people being pardoned for this, but if the possession charge is not the sole charge for any of them then no one is actually going free. As @Order2Chaos points out without expunging any records you are not clearing any records, especially since they all have other charges anyway. If he actually lowers the scheduling of pot and federally decriminalizes it then that is something, but they could still add charges to other crimes tomorrow. When are the feds going to patrol and bust you for possession anyway? The problem with busting people for possession is how the state and local police use possession to fuck with people. The FBI isn't using this to send poor and black people to prison for a joint. This is a complete nothingburger at this point to try and pretend Joe is Dark Brandon again. This is coupled with him backing off the trickle of forgiveness for student loans. Fuck you Joe Biden. Fuck you to the gullible Biden Bros who will pretend like Joe actually did something when he just cheated because he is still republican fascist Joe.
It doesn't matter why you initiate violence. You are still accountable for your actions. I said I'm not a fucking lawyer. I've never been dumb enough to get caught up "in the system." Seems like it would be pretty hard to end up in prison for weed alone. Maybe some bigger weight for intent to distribute. We'll drop the firearms charge, and reduce "fleeing to avoid arrest" to "misdemeanor reckless driving" or somesuch horse shit if you testify against this other dude. Something like that. ...said the guy who sounds like he got his idea of drug dealers from 80's TV shows.
Nope. you would have to expunge the record for the crime to not show up on a background check. It does not matter anyway according to the news because no one has just the possession charge. I am not saying other charges should be pardoned, but the fed is not the ones putting blacks and poor people in jail solely for having a joint. This does no good for anyone put in prison just for possession because the fed isn't the one shaking down teens at the mall for possession. It is a complete illusion that Joe did anything because no one is in federal prison for bullshit possession crimes. The thing the fed needs to do is to deschedule pot because they use it to get warrants and seize property from people for other crimes.
BRRRRRIINGGGGG! That is the cluephone ringing for you. It is the pot calling to say you are black and projecting like a motherfucker again.
A google search turned up this snippet from the NYT: The pardons will clear everyone convicted on federal charges of simple possession since it became a crime in the 1970s. Officials said full data was not available but noted that about 6,500 people were convicted of simple possession between 1992 and 2021, not counting legal permanent residents. The pardons will also affect people who were convicted under District of Columbia drug laws; officials estimateFd that number to be in the thousands. The pardons will not apply to people convicted of selling or distributing marijuana. And officials said there are no people now serving time in federal prisons solely for marijuana possession. But the move will help remove obstacles for people trying to get a job, find housing, apply to college or get federal benefits. Feel better now?
Translation, he's got the Blue Lives Matter Punisher skull emblazoned on his ginger melon, so he gets to sail through stop signs.
Nope. The only difference from a commutation is that it restores any federal rights (I think mostly of access to certain entitlement programs) contingent on not having a criminal record. In both cases the record remains. If your state does not allow felons to vote or hold public office for life, that remains as well unless the state specifically takes federal pardons into account.
No one is talking about releasing violent felons, no matter what your drug induced paranioia is telling you. You are indeed not a fucking lawyer. I've known a few weed dealers. Hard not to, if you don't live in Bumfuck Iowa. None of them were violent. Most of them were kids making a few bucks on the side. At the street level weed is pretty low bar. If you are talking the guys moving huge amounts they don't deal, they have people that get a cut for doing that.
While this is a very good thing, it’s bad timing for Democrats. Unless other laws are changed immediately, like not asking if you have ever been convicted of a crime on an employment application, many people are going to believe the republican commercials based on fear of “omg criminals on the streets!!!!”
Literally 2/3rds of America supports this. Morons watching Faux News aren't going to matter compared to that, and they weren't going to vote Dem anyway.
The "omg criminals in the streets!" people cannot be swayed by facts. They're the same idiots who say that crime is going up in survey after survey, even in polls that were taken at times when crime had been going down for years.
I agree with both. I just … I guess I’m not optimistic. I find myself thinking more and more often that the only way any real change is going to happen will be some sort of bloody revolutiion.
are there violent offenses being pardoned? no? then it's not relevant. Take your "legitimate defense" and tell it to Ahmaud Arbery, ya wannabe Bernie Goetz.
fun fact, the cops here used to always report what you had in the lowest measurements/the highest possible values. I was once convicted of possession for the purpose of traffick for having 7 grams in two packets.
Why do you assume marijuana sellers are violent? That much is obvious. Translation: you're whiter than my bed sheets.
Biden also said he is going to get marijuana off the schedule 1 list. Why do you hate the free market?
It is? All this time I have been beating the fuck out of my dealer and shooting kids every time. This is the problem with people like UA. Their fantasies don't make any sense. They are just there to justify their idiocy.
Here is the problem with Trump. Now his disciples think any president can just think things into happening.
well, that and the aforementioned punisher skull and black Fred Perry shirt help... while we're at it, another time I was pulled was riding my bicycle at about 10pm. I had an ounce of 'shrooms in the hip pocket of some BDUs. According to the cop, he shone his flashlight into my pocket while my arm was in there fishing around for my ID when he saw a bag of "plant material". You guessed it, charges for possession and possession for the purpose. starting to see a pattern here about the "three strikes" thing? When all is said and done, the amount of illicit substances I've been charged with totals less than $500 CDN, and that was all 25-30 years ago. I might still be in jail in America.
