I certainly can't disagree with that second sentence. But isn't that really the same thing as saying that they aren't following the teachings of Christ? "Love one another", "care for the poor", "everyone matters, regardless of race, class, sex, nationality, or any other factor you can think of", and so on? And, unfortunately, always has been. People have corrupted religion pretty much since the concept began. In the 3rd chapter of Genesis, sin entered into the human race. In the 4th chapter, a very religious man by the name of Cain (believed in God, presented offerings to God, talked to God...) killed his own brother out of rivalry and wasn't even sorry he did it. He was only sorry he got caught and was going to suffer for it. That's a pretty clear demonstration of how unfit "religion" is to really deal with the root problem of the human heart.
