All of your life, you've always felt a little "off." As a child, you liked some things that as a boy or a girl you weren't "supposed" to like, if you came from most families, and so you buried those behaviors and accepted your parents viewpoints because they were your parents, they wouldn't lead you astray.

As you get older, you start to notice things about yourself you don't like. Maybe it's major things, like you don't want a penis, or breasts feel like they don't belong on you, or perhaps it's more minor things like you see the color pink your mom picked for your room because "girls like pink" and want to vomit, or you like stuffed animals instead of football your dad says is what every boy likes.

That's how it can start. Some folks don't experience that, but many trans people have.

So, say you become an adult, like myself, and if you haven't figured it out yet, you've probably buried it so deep that it will take a trigger to actually bring it to the forefront. Like when you joke and say "don't we all fantasize about being a girl?" and your male compatriots all look at you like you've grown a second head because "no, man, who wants to be a girl?" which leads to questions. It leads to self-examinations, it leads to looking at yourself in the mirror and crying because you feel like someone put you in the wrong body, that the feelings you had as a child start to become more and more pronounced until they're loud enough to make you aware that you're not right. That something is very wrong. It didn't take any book, TV show, or even the internet to tell you this, you've realized this on your own.

What the TV show, book, or internet has done, though, is provided you a window into a world you've ignored for a long time. It allows you to communicate with others, sending and receiving signals that help you explore further than you thought you could, learning more about yourself, and where you differ from others. If you're fortunate and live in an area where it's not taboo, you can express yourself further, learning more and more about whether this is a part of who you are, and who you can be. If you're not fortunate, like so many of us aren't, you realize that your little corner of society sees you as a pervert, as someone undesirable, nasty, evil, a cancer on society. They equate your mere existence with criminality.

You are literally a criminal for being alive. You haven't hurt anyone. You don't want to hurt anyone. You just want to live openly and explore that part of yourself you have long denied, and yet you may become homeless, unemployed, denied basic rights, and even murdered, just because who you are inside doesn't match who you're told you have to be on the outside. You live in a prison of your own body, and people mock you for it, they make cruel assumptions about you and call it a joke. They tell you to lighten up, it's not that serious, while your fellow trans folks are assaulted, murdered, and even hunted in some countries, and you know where you live has only a thin veneer of civility and order sitting on top of that possible future.

None of us asked for this. Aside from some opportunists who see a chance to use our identity as a means to paint us all with the same brush, none of us are trying to hurt anybody just by existing.

I would also apply this sort of thing to bisexuality or being pansexual. Things are going to come out as we gain freedom and experience with GLBT issues. As silly as it sounds I never really realized there was a scale in trans until I got more experience. There are still people out there on the trans side who will say you are not trans if you are not always working towards a sex change. There is being transgendered without being transexual.

The claims that people are making others trans or gay is false. They were always capable of being that way, but the options were not given to them, and that is a shame. Think of what those people missed out on. It is called happiness. Maybe one of those weird crushes I had on my guy friends in high school could have been something really great in my life had we been open to it? Some guy might have been happy if he had been able to wear a goiwn to his prom, but he is cool being a guiy most of the rest of the time. The only reason they don't do it is to satisfy a republican.

The ones ginning the hate and fear up don't even believe it though.

Some of us won't transition because surgery (especially in the US) is prohibitively expensive. Hell, that kind of surgery is scary anyway! For others, if they were AMAB (assigned male at birth) and after 40 years they've gotten used to having a penis, they might want to keep it and change everything else. I mean, hell, after that amount of time, it would be like having phantom limb syndrome, you know? None of that is unreasonable at all.

Gender really is fluid, and I think the world would be a much better place if people got to explore theirs without the stigma of others who feel perfectly fine in their own skin deeming their judgments as God's law or the Law of Nature (as if most of them know anything about biology besides the middle school class they slept through).

Sounds like the child needs protecting from parents who want to keep her from seeing the world as it is. I had parents like that. Possibly not to this extent (I say possibly because a question during a recent recounting of a memory raised the possibility that there may have been such draconian style protection).

Either way, I've always resented both my parents for doing this as when I did get out into the world, I was so totally unprepared for living as an adult in this world. I had to learn everything and learn to accept others without judgement.

My guess is, this girl is going to have similar experiences when she leaves her parent's house.
