Oh shit! Was 9/11 really 22 years ago? And are the kangaroos ahead, I thought they were behind?

Not quite as bad as Ari Fleischer (Bush’s former PressSec) who used to ‘live’ tweet what was going on at the WH during the attacks and promised to never stop.

But then got hired by the Saudis as a communications consultant for the LIV Golf Tour and had a change of heart and now believes we need to move on.

    Then:

Correction, it was a half a lifetime ago for me. I was 22 when 9/11 happened, I'm now 44. 9/11/ 2001 is the day my cooking career began. I've come a long way since then.

I spent the day as I have the last few years, saying that 911 happened when Clinton was president and Bush was elected to fight the evildoers. Then afterwards Obama was elected and crashed the stock market. Later I come back to read the replies and laugh and see how many I caught agreeing with me.

I can remember reading stories about rescue workers having to hide so they could be “rescued” by the dogs, because the dogs were getting too depressed from not finding many survivors.

Okay, I'll spoiler the bulk of this post since I know you're not willing to expend any effort and just get to the fucking point: You're a goddamned idiot who doesn't know the first thing about shit and the proof of this is in the spoiler box which you won't read because it can't fit on a fucking bumper sticker, you snotty-nosed, malodorous pervert. Ya happy, prick?

Yep. Likely would have felt like an extension of the 90s right up until the GFC.

The UN wouldn't feel quite so neutered either if not for the US and allies giving the middle finger to it when it came to Iraq.

Last night I couldn't sleep and ended up with a video playing in the background, two hours of 9/11 coverage from a few minutes before the first impact to after both towers came down. It's still chilling how you can feel the world change over the course of it happening. What does make it feel like a long time ago though is the delay in information. Takes a couple of minutes for the anchors to even realise the first tower has completely collapsed. Eye witness reports from people calling in not even agreeing on what size of aircraft hit because there's not a thousand phones streaming all angles to social media.

It would be such a different reporting now. Heck, there would live footage from inside the towers and even possibly the planes as they fell and impacted respectively. :(

 Here's the short-list of the ones you have said that you believe:
Do you want me to bump the Jan 6th thread where we're talking about the insurrection in real-time and you're arguing against shit that we're watching unfold?

Oh, as for Forrestal, he was driven to suicide, not murdered. The guy who drove him to suicide? Drew Pearson. The same guy who ran a smear campaign against Preston Tucker.

To get an idea of how slowly info moved in those days, i usually slept w my radio on but the night before I actually remembered to shut it off. The next morning, I got up and didn't bother turning it on. I had a class at 7 and I didn't hear anyone talk about the towers until 7:45 as the 1st period band class was trickling in, which was three hours after the first plane had hit.

Uh oh. Joe Biden stated he was at Ground Zero the day after 9/11 (9/12, for those keeping track) and HE WASN'T. Is it dementia or something far more sinister? Either way, we must start the impeachment process.

I was in college on 9/11. I remember going to the student union to read people's reactions and post about it on the Trek BBS.

The Internet was smaller back then.

    Yeah, my experience as well.

I was moving in to a new apartment. Didn't have cable or internet yet. Was listening to a CD on the way in to work.

Noticed a lot of military activity on the road, a SAM battery on a flat bed passed me. Even then I thought, meh, it's Northern Virginia, we are right outside DC, just business as usual.

Then as I was turning onto the beltway I saw smoke from a couple of miles to the right. The turn on 66 at the time meant you turned right to go left on 495, and about 2 miles down that way was the Pentagon.

I turned on the TV and one of the first things I heard was reports of another plane heading down the Potomac toward the White House. That turned out to be false, but there were several panicked reports.

That night driving home I stopped by a convenience store. A man blaring Arabic music and clearly celebrating the attack drove up next to me. I got out of the car and clearly had an expression on my face because he packed up and left.

On Trekbbs one of the people I thought was my friends was celebrating as well. A European from Belgium.

Two days later a group of my friends got together because we knew there would be blowback against the Muslim community here. One of my friends picked out a Mosque, he used to post here, Faisent. We were going to go to the Mosque and give them a peace wreath as a gesture of goodwill.

But looking into them further they had radical ties, refused to acknowledge the state of Israel, and had accusations of support for fundraising for terrorism.

We decided to hold off, and then eventually dropped the idea.

Turns out they were one of the Mosques that harbored a few of the 9/11 hijackers we found out months later.

On top of that, I had worked security at Dulles Airport while going to college on and off for half a decade. I had met at least two of the people on flight 77. Can't say I knew them, but we definitely had interacted on several occasions. After all, it was my job as security to make sure they were safe.

I've known some very good people who were Muslim so I won't paint a wide brush about Muslims, but considering I'm also an atheist and pay close attention to human rights abuses I'm not a fan of organized religion as a whole and Islam at the moment at least is the most problematic.

I went to a recruiting office, but I was already in my early 30s, and they told me they didn't need me.

Definitely a formative moment for me. But I'm glad we are past it now.

Speaking as someone who sometimes has to go work in airports, the ban on non-ticketed people going past security has been a complete pain in the ass. I can recall doing exactly one story in the passenger area since 9/11 and my reporter was worried we were going to get kicked out because I was bitching about TSA so much during the screening. :garamet:
