Seems like the only reason for her to accept is if she wants to be governor and feels like the increased profile from being an interim senator would set her up well to run for that job when Newsom is term-limited in 2026.

Whoever accepts this appointment is NOT likely to ever be elected Senator from California. Padilla is going to stay there for 20 or 30 years; so would Schiff or Porter. Lee would not serve as long, but she's pretty far behind in the polls. Most likely, Padilla and either Schiff or Porter will be the next Boxer and Feinstein, occupying both seats for many years without serious opposition.

So for somebody to agree, they have to either be retired (Boxer), feel that an interim appointment would set them up well for some other ambition, or currently hold a job that they wouldn't have to give up in order to accept the appointment.

Another name I just saw is Laphonza Butler. She's the head of EMILY'S List so she's an experienced political operative, but she doesn't hold a position that she'd have to give up -- presumably she could take a leave of absence -- so it might be appealing to her.

(And the sight of the Tightie Righties melting down at the thought of a senator named Laphonza would be spectacular.)

Everything I've read about Feinstein suggests she was a radical centrist, deeply committed to maintaining the status quo at all costs and making things better for absolutely no one. Also also defending Confederate flags.
