Thrawn was a little underwhelming for me. I know it is the same actor who voiced Thrawn in Rebels but I think they should have recast for live action.

He looked pudgy and his receding hairline was distracting. I would expect a perfectionist like Thrawn to stay in better shape. Someone said he looked like a Smurf Elon Musk and now I won’t ever be able to think of anything else.

Other than that minor and superficial quibble I am enjoying the show so far. I think the other casting choices looks great and I am interested to see what happens.

This is never going to be as good as the original Thrawn Trilogy (which should have been the real sequel trilogy) but at least we are getting some new stuff here.

Total agree. In Rebels, in more than one scene, Thrawn was seen engaging in or speaking of his workouts. He’s still on the same ship (so glad they made it look like it had been through hell) so all his exercise equipment was still there. Not sure he could have done anything about the hairline though.

Yea, I was sorely disappointed they chose to completely overlook the Thrawn trilogy and go 30 years into the future instead. Would really have loved to have seen Han, Luke, and Leia (even if played by different actors) 5 years after the fall of the empire trying to build a new republic.

Well, Thrawn's "workout equipment" wasn't just a gym but battle droids trying to kill him, so it's possible they've had to be repurposed in the interim.

Could be. But, if that’s all it would take for him to give up his workout, he wasn’t doing it for the workout anyway.

We gotta cut Thrawn some slack here...
It has been nearly 15 years in universe, living in a wrecked ship... I know I'm a little softer at 54 than I was at the edge of 40, despite fresh groceries.

    he's not wrong...

and I hate to say it, but Rosario and her lack of sword training had an adverse effect on all the other lightsaber fighting. They could've cheated with CGI and nobody worth listening to would've complained. Instead they slowed everyone else down to her :(

Ahsoka, or rather Rebels S5, comfortably stands as the most boring, lifeless and unengaging bit of SW of the Disney+ era.

My indifference towards Star Wars is now on par with Marvel. Nice job, Disney. :salute:

I thought it was okay but way too short. This should have gotten a full 10 episodes. There isn’t enough here and who knows how long we will have to wait for a follow-up?

One big problem is Ahsoka is so passive. I know she is an experienced Jedi at this point and she isn’t going to act like a kid anymore but passive, serene Jedis don’t make for very exciting TV.

Thrawn is also quite subdued and unemotional, makes for an interesting character in a novel but not really an exciting villain in live action. Baylan is also a passive character.

Sabine and Shin are probably the most interesting characters since they have some internal conflict and we don’t really know what to expect from them.

I still liked it overall and probably liked it better than Obi Wan but it feels like a teaser more than an actual story.

They're already prepping for season 2, and they want it to drop in time before Filoni's Mando-verse crossover movie.

At this point, Star Wars is firmly in the fantasy camp instead of SF. Which is fine if you're into that kind of thing. Conceded "the force" was always mysticism, as Han noted, but this (and apparently the animated predecessors) have mystical (magical?) components as central to the whole story.

Not complaining exactly but I was more impressed with Andor, by a pretty wide margin, than I am by this sort of story.

As I said either in this thread, or the general SW thread, all the stuff the force can do is a-okay with George Lucas.
Lucas personally approved every new power the novel writers came up with, and 99% of the Disney-era SW powers are copied from the novels.
Dave Filoni personally worked with Lucas, and Lucas had say over his stuff directly, so Filoni-verse makes up that last 1%.

No one can say "this isn't Lucas's vision!! :weep:".
    Nope it is. Sorry.

    Not surprised or disappointed.

Like I said, it's FINE but we should get that this operates more in the realm of Lord f the Rings or Game of Thrones more than Star Trek or The Expanse.
(and yes I know that Star Trek isn't strictly "HARD" SF either but still)

The Sword Of Tanzin is totally a comic book idea.
Even though they didn't do a specifically named sword, the idea of charging a metal sword with force goes back to the 90's.
In the comic timeline, they predate lightsabers.
Wouldn't be surprised if they turn up in the 25,000 years prequel.

Anyway, yeah, Ahsoka is proof they're cherry-picking the old b-canon like a motherfucker now.

That's always been the case though, it's been fantasy in a sci-fi setting from ANH onwards - even the whole A Long Time Ago... is another way of saying Once Upon a Time.

Nice thing about a big world though is that you can keep the setting and tone down the fantasy as required.

I preferred Andor too, but part of that was it had a very 70s vibe.

Enjoyed Ahsoka, but it was very much a morsel of a larger meal which seems a waste of a whole series IMO. In many ways, it's glorified exposition to expand the Mandoverse.

One thought is that it's a shame this tale wasn't the Sequel Trilogy, Beylon and Shin could be switched out for Ben and Rey, Ahsoka for Leia, and with Rey accepting the help rather than declining it as Shin did.

Battle royales between imperial remnants jockeying for power? Thrawn vs Gus Fring vs Ghost Emperor? Sith and Jedi putting aside their dislike to battle the Nightsisters?

Sounds a lot better than the remixed OT we ended up with to my ears.

Star Wars was always science fantasy. The prequels and the midiclorians (whatever) attempted to make it science fiction, but it didn’t hold. I liked Andor better than most of the Star Wars stories because it deals with normal, everyday people. Most stories, historically, are always about those in charge or about people who are in some way special. Andor isn’t like that. And that’s what I like about it. Same with Rebels. The novel, Ahsoka by E K Johnson, shows how Ahsoka survived right after order 66. That’s where this story picks up and it makes Anakin’s question “Is that what this is all about” more clear as to the “this” that he’s talking about. She no longer wants to fight. She wants to live a normal life.

Anyway, both Andor and Ahsoka are definitely science fantasy and I like it that way.

I normally like Honest Trailers. But, … many more episodes like this and he’ll turn into The Drinker. But, hey, if that gets more likes and subscribers, who am I to complain?

I dunno... I'd give Andor sci fi because it would work outside of the SW universe and doesn't really have any none technological stuff going on. No force, no fanciful but impractical weapons... just droids, blasters, and interplanetary travel... but that's it. You could set this in 1930s earth and it'd work.

And that’s why it’s so compelling. But, also why I consider it fantasy. As there isn’t really any science to the fiction. It’s just fantasy. Set in another galaxy where interplanetary travel is the norm and one guy controls the entire galaxy.
