There's no question that Yon-Rogg was an annoying douche who was a proxy for sexist men and echoed complaints/thoughts real-life sexists have, although Yon-Rogg himself's issues aren't rooted in sexism. In other words, Yon-Rogg didn't think of Carol as inferior because of her gender.

But Yon-Rogg isn't the real villain of the movie. He's just a cog. The real villain is the actual entity that brainwashed Carol and limited her power, which is the Supreme Intelligence. The Supreme Intelligence is gender-neutral but appears in the form of a woman for most of the movie.

And again, accepting that Yon-Rogg is the embodiment of smug sexism, that doesn't mean that the movie is saying all/most men are bad. It very clearly features, as I said, Fury and Talos as good men (among others) and some women as bad.

I don't see why you have a problem with Carol being super awesome and no apparent problem with Tony Stark being super awesome, or most of the people featured in these types of films.

A friend observed BW in a way that really helped it click for me.
BW is a James Bond movie, but one of the goofy Roger Moore ones, like "Moonraker".

...I just really wish Joss Whedon hadn't shoved the hysterectomy shit into her backstory, cuz that shit's hard to cringe down in a lighthearted action flick.

It's been too long since I saw any Moore Bonds, but I enjoy them for what they are. But unlike those films, basically none of the decisionmaking by any of the BW characters made sense other than to get from one point to another.

SHIELD wants to have BW prove her loyalty to them by assassinating Dreykov. But she actually flubs the job, and neither she nor SHIELD notice not only that she flubs that job but that he has built up a world-spanning spy network over the course of at least one decade. probably more?

Yelena gets woken up from being mind-controlled by Dreykov and decides she wants to bring down Dreykov's organization. She doesn't use the fact that she was a leading operative in said organization with all her spy training to bring the organization down from within, or to use any of her recent contacts to help (for instance, deprogramming other Widows she has worked with). She instead sends the deprogramming chemicals to a safe house that Natasha -- who she hasn't seen for decades -- used with no information about what it is, or why she has sent it, all while she has no particular reason to Natasha might go there.

Yelena and Natasha have a fight that has no logical purpose other than to show that Yelena's got skills.

In trying to find the Red Room, there literally is no reason to think that Red Guardian would have any insight as to where it might be found since he's been apparently locked up for years BECAUSE of Dreykov. So the whole break-him-out-of-the-gulag sequence doesn't make sense. And there's no reason for them not to go to Melina first since they know she is actively working with Dreykov.

I could go on but this is enough ranting for the moment.

65 / 35 % male / female audience split - male misogynists are out in droves hate-watching the film, while self-hating women are staying at home. Curious.

Look, people love to hop on the bandwagon and take a trendy shit on things like The Marvels. But break down the numbers:
    • 4th best weekend for a post-pandemic, PG-13 action sequel about an American fighter pilot.
    • 5th best opening weekend for a 2023 comic book movie.
    • 5th best weekend for a 2023, PG-13 film with a 30+ year old blonde woman in the lead role.
    • 4th best November opening weekend for a Disney film in which one of the main characters is a blonde woman with superpowers.
    • 15th best opening weekend for a November film that has a female protagonist.
    • 39th best opening weekend of the 2020s.
    • 5th best opening weekend for a MCU film with a female lead.
    • 19th best MCU Previews for a sequel and/or crossover.
    • 27th best MCU Previews.
    • 32nd best MCU Opening Day.
    • 33rd best MCU True Friday.
    • 33rd best MCU Opening Saturday.
    • 33rd best MCU Opening Sunday.
    • 33rd best opening weekend for an MCU film.
    • 56th best opening weekend for a Marvel film.
    • 76th best opening weekend for a Marvel or DC film.
    I rest my case.

The problem is where this whiny CW-grade feminist victimhood crap is shoehorned in at the expense of decent storytelling, which was NOT the case with RDJ Iron Man. People want escapism from this kind of entertainment, not a gender politics lecture from some bitter combative activist writer who was hired for that reason alone.

Even conceding what you were saying is true for discussion's sake, then the issue isn't that Carol is depicted as super awesome, since, as you are effectively conceding, most every superhero is depicted as super awesome. That's kind of the point of them being superheroes.

The issue is the "whiny CW-grade feminist victimhood crap."

BTW, LOL at the notion that there aren't gender politics at work in Iron Man or most other films. It's just a gender politics lecture we're comfortable with, because it's one in which a handsome, rich guy can wrap every woman around his finger, even ones who should know better like Pepper and the journalist.

Iron Man wasn't immediately awesome. It was a character that had to be developed, as if they were telling an actual story, rather than some self-insert revenge fantasy about some argument the writer lost in high school. Sure, you can describe both in superficial, generalized terms that make the two seem equivalent, but I don't think you're even fooling yourself with that contrarian devil's advocate bullshit.

The montages of Carol training her whole life, and the movie starting with her doing some more training, and losing; lemme guess, you went for Reese's Pieces, and to pee those times.

Also, we're going to have to throw a flag on the BS notion that Tony Stark wasn't immediately awesome in Iron Man. From graduating MIT at 18 to taking over his company at a similarly young age...he clearly is depicted as a prodigy pre-suit.

    upload_2023-11-15_11-52-20.png

Tony's only character development in Iron Man was twofold: he decided to get Stark International out of the weapons manufacture business as a result of seeing firsthand what his weapons were doing in the Middle East and he was arguably willing to stop womanizing and start dating Pepper. Other than that, he's basically the same brilliant, snarky, irresponsible, charismatic guy at the beginning of the movie as he is at the end.

Tony Stark, Thor, and Steve Rogers are all immediately awesome in every way right from the beginning, even before Steve gets the serum he's the best person alive. (MCU Tony is who Elon Musk wishes he could be.) Same thing when Peter Quill shows up, he's awesome in every way, even if the bad guys don't recognize his greatness at first. T'Challa is also immediately awesome in every way possible. Vision too, picking up Thor's hammer moments after coming into existence. Dr. Strange is just Tony Stark but with magic, he's the greatest surgeon ever and the greatest magic user ever.

Oh, but if Carol's awesome, that's some unrealistic feminist agenda nonsense. :dayton:

It's by S.J. Clarkson who directed episodes of "Jessica Jones", and "Defenders".
    It has that Netflix-verse feel.
The plot looks like a Marvel-ized "Final Destination".

Course, "New Mutants" was trying to be Marvel-ized "Dream Warriors" and that didn't make it good.

Let's hope S.J. can stick the landing better.

Marvel is looking to have Pedro Pascal play Reed Richards in the FF.

    https://variety.com/2023/film/news/fantastic-four-pedro-pascal-mr-fantastic-1235355985/

One would have to think it's true since Variety and Deadline are reporting it and they don't screw up (much) or engage in clickbait.

I probably would have run through a whole bunch of actors before coming up with Pedro for that role, since I associate him with rugged lone wolf man of action and less nerdy intellectual giant, but that's why they call it acting, I guess.

Or maybe they want to have this Reed be more like some of Pedro's previous roles and less like classic Reed.

I've said it multiple times in this thread:

    John Krasinski or GTFO. :bailey:

I really don't understand WTF Marvel/Disney is thinking, unless Krasinski has said he doesn't want to reprise the role.

Just got out of The Marvels. It was great. Not the best MCU film I've ever seen, but lots of them have parts that just drag and make me want I check my phone, and this movie didn't, so I call that a win.

And in retrospect, Carol really isn't a Mary Sue. She's just Hal Jordan with Superman-ish powers instead of a ring. (Her "arrangement" on the water planet reeks of something Hal Jordan is probably doing on countless worlds.) And again, just like in Endgame,
