Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is accusing the government of India of involvement in the fatal shooting of a Canadian Sikh leader — a claim that will have seismic effects on an already shaky bilateral relationship. Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar was brazenly shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C. on June 18. Nijjar, a supporter of a Sikh homeland in the form of an independent Khalistani state, had been branded by the Indian government as a "terrorist" and accused of leading a militant separatist group — something his supporters have denied. Now, Trudeau said, Canada's national security apparatus has reason to believe that "agents of the Indian government" carried out the killing of this Canadian citizen, who also served as the president of Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. "Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar," Trudeau said Monday in a speech to the House of Commons. "Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty. It is contrary to the fundamental rules by which free, open and democratic societies conduct themselves. "As you would expect, we have been working closely and co-ordinating with our allies on this very serious matter." A senior government source told CBC News that Trudeau has briefed the leaders of some of Canada's closest allies about the case, including U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Joe Biden. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-indian-government-nijjar-1.6970498
OMG now they have gone and woken the sleeping beaver. I am not sure what will happen next. No really, is Canada going to cry or apologize?
I think it's pretty clear how I feel about our fucking idiot prime minister but he's getting a lot of flack and criticism for talking openly about this, which I disagree with If a Canadian citizen was murdered on Canadian soil by a foreign government then he no fucking doubt should be speaking up about it. Good for him Finally that jellyfish cunt grows a backbone
As an aside we were working on a free trade deal with India when all of a sudden a few weeks ago both parties stopped talking and scuttled it. I wonder if this has something to do with it
Word is the Globe and Mail forced Trudeau's hand by publishing a story about it, but still, I'm glad he's not backing down now that the truth is out. There was gossip about Trudeau and Modi acting weird at G20 a couple weeks ago, I guess that explains that.
Pretty sure I caught a couple of Singh posts about it yesterday.. How've India and China been getting along lately? I know they have historic beefs, but with CHina now being the number 1 contender I'm curious as to how far the enemy of an enemy can go to putting those beefs in the background? India ain't got much reason to love the west...
I know that economically China views India as a big time threat. The Mainland Chinese i do business with constantly talk shit about them, but they’re smart enough to know that India is replacing Chinese cheap labor for manufacturing China doesn’t invest as much in India as they do other places (North Africa for instance) despite them having a pretty significant trading relationship which is interesting There are also some border skirmishes but I don’t think those amount to much
I don't imagine China wants to aggressively claim their disputed territories -- which include nearly the entirety of Arunachal Pradesh, the northeastern most state of India -- for a variety of reasons, not least of which is Russia's current foreign misadventuring.
yeah, it was those borderlines I was wondering about... like would CHina give up disputed land to sweeten a bigger pie? spheres of influence/freer trade/labour mobility? I'm sure they can figure out some shared interests...
Secret Indian Memo Ordered “Concrete Measures” Against Hardeep Singh Nijjar Two Months Before His Assassination in Canada
Modi does think he's Putin - his party just suspended 141 members of parliament from engaging in legislation for the winter session. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...cused-attack-democracy-mps-suspended-modi-bjp
