Not to defend Tucker, who would likely lick Putin's boots regardless, but I think it's plausible that Tucker (and even your typical college-educated American) does not really know much about WWII (or anything else) until it began to directly affect America. It's also possible that even if he knew that to be crazy, in the heat of the interview, he didn't process it.
