Isn't this actually a good test for something that possibly explodes if in contact with ocean water? People are knowjn to drive their ICE trucks on the beach. Going to the beach for fun is a thing pick ups are good for because you can throw all your beach fun including a grill into the back, and some people drive them in the surf for fun.

We also have found out that electric car batteries can light on fire after being flooded by salt water. Also, having driven a SUV with a bit of clearence into a large puddle and having it stall out due to water in the engine compartment despite plastic undercoating to prevent splash, this would be inherently dangerous to any electric offroad car on the ocean beach, and potentially on other beaches.

Right now the warning is do not put any electric car in your garage after driving through ocean flooding because they might catch fire and burn your home down because they are especially hot burning and damn near impossible to put out. Your home fire extinguisher is not putting these things out, and possibly not the fire department for a while. Also these fires seem to take a while to start because they involve a chemical reaction so electricv cars are a time bomb if the salt water gets into the battery.

Thank Tesla for actually testing this one thing, even though they are likely to completely cover up any negative incidents of battery fire.

That is it, I am building my own cubertruck. I have some plywood, some silver spraypaint, a bunch of shiny silver duct tape, and some gum. I figure I will just build it around an old Honda Accord and it will be more reliable and better.

who wants one? I will throw an old 8-track in for you boomers.

Here It Is, Your First Look at the Final Cybertruck

Something I just happened to think about: The stainless steel panels on the Cybertruck are probably polished with, and I shit you not, those red 3M scrub pads that you can buy to wash your dishes with. (How do I know this? Because when I worked at the kitchen fabrication company, that's what we used to polish the stainless steel equipment we made to clean up the weld marks, etc. We also had to have them looking better than the panels on the DeLorean I saw up close.) Now, if you know anything about polishing metal, you know that the smoother you get it, the shinier it is. Also, the smoother the surface of your vehicle, the less wind resistance it has. Sooner, or later, someone is going to attempt to polish their Cybertruck to make it as shiny as possible. So, it'll look something like this:

(That's Justin Beiber's Fisker Karma, BTW.)

That's a fucking road hazard in a place that has a lot of bright, sunny days.

About that, it just hit me tonight exactly how bad they're fucking up. The Cybertruck uses a "custom" 300-series stainless steel. Basically, when you see a number like 300, 310, 316, or whatever in front of a metal, it tells you the following: It has the same ingredients as any other alloy in that sequence, though there might be some variation in the amounts (not a lot), but the major difference between a 310 and 316 steel is how it's treated during the initial making of the metal (like it's held at a particular temperature for a set period of time while it's molten). And while there might be significant differences in the characteristics of a 100 series, when compared to a 500 series, they're not going to be nearly as much as they are between a 300 and 399 series.

Why do I bring this up? Commercial kitchen equipment is made with 300 series stainless. When I worked at the BBQ place, we cleaned the stuff by spraying it down with (basically) Easy-Off oven cleaner and hot water. The racks that we cooked the meat on were cleaned by dunking them into a giant vat of the stuff for about an hour and then blasting it with a pressure washer. During slow times of the year, we'd store the racks we weren't using outside, exposed to the elements. They didn't rust.

Now, when I worked at the foundry, we made parts for Honda out of 316 stainless, and we fucked up the passivating process on a bunch of them (basically, you boil the parts in a mixture of citric acid and water). The parts were so susceptible to rusting that the time from them being made to the completed vehicle arriving at the dealership was more than enough for it to appear.

Today I had to take a road trip for work and saw another one of Eegah's "trucks" on the interstate. Except this one was towing a small box trailer (probably because you can't haul anything in the bed) and it was two-tone: the bottom half of the vehicle was painted black.

I would've taken a photo but I was northbound and it was going the other direction.
