You probably would have to come up with an example of someone who made such a glaring record of lying about their assets in order to procure loans to have a point of comparison. I can't say I have followed the ins and outs of the records at all closely, but the blatant example of tripling the size of Trump's apartment so its value could be tripled is hard to ignore. Or that in one set of paperwork a given asset is worth $X to secure a loan and then elsewhere saying it's only worth $X-Y, where he's paying taxes or it otherwise behooves him for it to be worth a lower amount.

It may well be Trump-specific. But not because this is political.

It's because he's dumb enough that you can actually prove he did this shit.

Well, that's part of it, but a "defendant implicated themself" result has been problematic where the cops are concerned, not that Donny Boy ever got perp-sweated.

Having actual evidence on top of an admission of guilt is just the cherry AND the whipped cream.

If you owe the bank a thousand dollars, you have a problem. If you owe the bank a billion dollars, the bank has a problem. Do you really think banks that Trump still owes hundreds of millions or billions of dollars are going to push for his liquidation, when it's clear that he's massively inflated his wealth? Especially when most of the assets Trump does have are in commercial real estate, which is in the middle of a major bust?

No, you take a very middle of the road line at trial, and thank your lucky stars that you might get the, what was it, $168 million, in interest payments you should have gotten in the first place, grit your teeth, and don't lend to Trump under the fraudulent terms again. You might even still lend to Trump, just to make sure he doesn't default on his existing loans and stick you with the deflating CRE.

I was thinking of the motivation to downplay the issue from the banks' perspective was mainly out of fear of retribution from other businesses and Trump cultists if they answered honestly "Yes, we're pissed that we lost out on this money and that we were bamboozled into these obviously fraudulent numbers." I hadn't factored in the ongoing debts that Trump himself still owes and concerns about whether or not he would be able to pay those back. So thanks for pointing out that factor.

If this weren't Trump, this board wouldn't be as gleeful, no. But there would be glee and a desire for more justice.

To be fair, NFTs are an excellent business if you can get enough people to buy in. There's basically no overhead at all and you can pump out as much or as little as makes sense.

Anyway, I wish there were cogent Trump supporters who could explain why they support him at this point. Like in 2016, I could see the argument that he's not like other politicians and I trust him to clean up the swamp that is DC.

But after he had 4 years and obviously did not make the swamp better, didn't really do anything "right" from their perspective except judges/overturning Roe and tax cuts, and when more has come out about his taxes, his fraud, his sexual assault, his insurrection attempt, his unfitness as a matter of character, the legion of former administration officials who blast him, the classified documents, etc etc.

WaPo had a story the other day suggesting that, if the merger just approved by the SEC goes through, Trump's shares in his digital media companies (including Truth Social) would be worth $4b, which would negate his legal costs at a swoop (of course, he'd need to find someone to buy his shares).

They can't turn a blind eye to the fraud that has been revealed, the possibility of criminal convictions, his general trend of trying to cheese his way out of repaying people, his already existing liabilities, right?

Or would it just be a matter of just setting such high interest or demanding so much collateral that it would be worth it?

At least, I am assuming that the Trump attorney filed a multi-page brief calling for a stay. For a judge to reject it in a handful of sentences like that...If something like that happened to me in general, let alone in a nationally publicized event, would make me really want to hide, or do something drastic like quit the profession.
