meh, I make more from my 40 hrs/week than UA in wages and benefits. granted that isn't a high bar, but for this debate it's enough. I'm also a stakeholder/director in the land trust that owns my building and a couple of others, which'd mean influencing real estate assets worth at least ten times what you'll ever have. Honestly, it doesn't matter to me how people may have fucked up in the past or how incapable circumstances may have rendered them. I have the means and ability to help them not starve or go without basic human needs.

As stated, you've said the kind of work you do, and salary ranges are easy to look up. Beyond that, we know you sold your Jeep and rode a bike to work, at least for a bit. We also know that you have to make a lot of sacrifices to be able to put a decent amount in savings. That's not enough to come up with an exact number, but it's enough to estimate somewhat accurately. You might not actually be standing in the shit ocean, but you can see it if you look out the window, and you can definitely smell it.

Say that out of every 10 startup businesses, nine will eventually fail in five years and cost their owners $50,000, and one will succeed and net its owner $1 million. The mathemetical expectation (look it up if you missed that day in Algebra I) is positive. But your odds of having that 1-in-10 business are a lot greater if you can afford to go through two, three, four, or five failures first.
I had a bit of luck today. Got a ride offer for $60 for a 75mi trip. Not great, especially since it was likely I wouldn't get a ride on the way back. It would be a slight net loss, but I could use the cash flow. Woman texts me and says she just needs a suitcase delivered. That sounds suspicious as hell, but I had a good feeling about it, so I talked to her on the phone. I determined it wasn't sus, delivered the suitcase. She gave me a $115 tip. I drove back to Metro Detroit, and immediately bought $115 worth of lottery tickets. Kidding. It's going toward my car payment. I did spend $20 on dinner though, because if I have a good day on Uber I'm not eating fucking ramen for the forth day in a row.

I'm not interested in how you get by until there is potential for you burdening others, namely ME. At that point, the way you handle your affairs absolutely IS everyone else's business.
