I disagree.
Empire can stand on it's own, even with the cliff hanger ending. The characters, their relationships, and their plots are all established by the time Luke is in the bacta tank. There's a not so subtle build to the father/son reveal throughout... we end knowing that the story will go on, but it doesn't matter where at this point.
