2024 General Election Thread

Given how urban areas tend to skew Dem, I'm actually surprised Denton, Tarrant, and Collins Counties went for Trump, and only Dallas County for Harris in the DFW Metroplex. Clearly Ft Worth and Arlington are more conservative or prefer to 'stick it to the libs'

I do not consider myself as adhering to a religion. I am a fervent disciple of Jesus Christ, but religion is a human invention that is part of the problem rather than part of the solution. The Christian religion has not been much better, throughout history, than the Muslim religion. Precisely because, as you say, religion (Christian or otherwise) is generally controlled by greedy, power-hungry people who are "at best, idiots, and at worst, evil-doers". It is worth note that the primary enemies of Jesus were the religious leaders of the time.

Morning everyone. It's not over yet but it's clear that there's been a lot of motivated reasoning over the last few days around here.

Regular Christians? Yes. I still work with regular Christians every day, trying to help people in my community.

So I have an immediate takeaway: The Democrats need to work on their messaging to Rural America, and that's while addressing the gun issues Urban America whilst making the 2A a sacrosanct and fundamental line they will not abridge. To be clear, I have no love for 2A, especially as the bludgeon club the Right has turned it into, and honestly we'd be better off without it, but the Dems absolutely need to work within its ill-defined framework to address Rural America's oft-neglected needs. And yes, Rural America absolutely does need its arms to manage their lifestyle.

All of that hinges upon who takes the White House.

I don't necessarily disagree, but unfortunately many of the people arguing you can hold your nose and vote for the lesser of two evils without it being an endorsement of them were also simultaneously arguing that anyone else who had voted with the same logic in other situations was an active endorsement in those situations.

The Democratic Party needs to become the party of workers again. It needs to stop trying to be Republican Lite (look, we got Dick Cheney! Vote for us!) and needs to dig in on its original party bona fides. Represent the coal miners, the rail workers, the average working person again. Reach down and speak up for the poor, not just "defend the middle class" but point out that we're all being fucked and things need fixed, and then fix them, not offer compromises with a party that has decided at some point that science is a tool of the devil.

And all of this should be part of the Messaging to Rural America. If the Urban Centers can be reliably Blue, outreach to the Flyover and Mountain States needs to be an extension of that, those small Electoral College numbers be damned. They. Add. Up.

To say that I think we'll have elections in 2028, if Trump wins, is being optimistic. To put it mildly. My neighbors are all Latinos. What do you think is going to happen to them if Trump wins?

Man, if you want to go freak yourself out, go watch the HBO movie "Conspiracy" with Kenneth Branagh and Stanley Tucci. It's based on the transcripts of the meetings where they planned the death camps. It was in 1942, by 1943, not only were the camps open, but they were beginning the industrial process of mass-murder. They had to work it all out from scratch. These guys don't. So they don't have to go dicking around with the other stuff before they hit on their final method.

Pennsylvania's heavily leaning in Trump's favor. Philadelphia's ballot count is almost complete, and yet with 93% of the state's count in, Trump has a 4% lead. She could still pull it off, but it would absolutely be contested at that point.
If Trump gets PA, I'm pretty sure that it would be all over but the shouting.

Well, if Harris loses, and it seems more likely than not at this point, all there is to do is to sit back and watch the shit show. The entire government is MAGA.

And Ukraine is fucked, the Palestinians are fucked, Russia emboldened, and China might take the opportunity to try for Taiwan. We might get WWIII after all - but this time the US might well be on the side of the Axis.

And SCOTUS will now feel empowered to do whatever the hell it wants. Gay marriage is probably gone. I'm not sure how they could be any more pro oligarch, but I'm sure they will find a way.

And as just about every economist predicted the economy will go to shit based on Trump's insanity, and none of the Republicans will do anything about the price of education, real estate, or groceries, odds are things will be a shambles by the time the next vote comes along.

The question is, will that vote matter at all.
