Damn. Here I thought I could get a straight answer from you. I guess we're left with the fact that Afghanistan shouldn't do stuff like this because it 'might' piss of the Taliban. God forbid that the Afghani government who let the terrorists terrorize them from making progress.
I kinda agree with Cass... *shudder* Its great they're planning to do this and that they have SOME confidence they can try, but I don't know if it'll be that great in the long term.
Actually, I did agree with her that it was a good idea. I'm not sure that any specific development idea will fly but I'm also not going to hedge bets the way she did.
Valid criticism. But to say that they shouldn't do it because it 'might' piss of the Taliban is ridiculous.
I don't think she was giving that as a reason for not doing it, just pointing out that it will make people unhappy. Heck, EXISTING pisses off the Taliban, because that means they don't have their 70 virgins yet.
You know when I'll be really confident that we're winning in Afghanistan and Iraq? Starbucks. You start seeing Starbucks' pop up on every corner in Kabul and Tikrit and you know we've beaten the Bad Guys.
According to Cass we should seriously contemplate not existing then. Just to not piss the Taliban off.
For the record, what Aurora actually said was that this was a good idea but she was afraid that it wouldn't work. And I have to agree with the sentiment that planned cities usually turn out poorly. Brasilia, anyone?
Precisely. And as Lanzman points out, planned cities don't always work. There's no guarantee that a venture of this magnitude would be 100% successful no matter where it was initiated, much less in a country like Afghanistan. Unless Aurora had started this thread bouncing up and down in a cheerleader's outfit, some people would still rather shoot the messenger than actually understand what they were reading.
This is correct. But for some people, you must mark every sentence with a smiley so they can grasp the meaning. We should think about a hack that translates posts into comic panels.
Just flutter your eyelashes and flash your tits at 'em. It's a requirement before Grrls are allowed to talk about serious topics around here. Unless you've got guns. Guns are a good substitute for tits.
There is a difference in saying planned cities don't work, well because they don't work.....and saying they shouldn't build them because it might piss off the Taliban.
So, Azure... seriously now. You don't think that a full blown civil war including suicide bomber squads would pose a tiny little problem for such a project? Your ability to ignore/not get the meaning of what I said is staggering, but can you answer me this simple question? Also, look up the phrase 'I don't think one can do xxxxxx' and compare it to 'I think they shouldn't do xxxxxxxx'. Report back with your findings tomorrow.
There is no full blown civil war. You're the one who implied that the Afghani people should allow themselves to be terrorized, and not risk their lives to make progress.
Surprise. I take it the obligatory commentless neg rep is forthcoming? I get it that you can't simply say 'OK I misread that'. But really, you shouldn't (see? That's how you use it.) draw out looking like the biggest fool between Alberta and Wiener Neustadt here.
So which part of that is confusing you? That no one can plan 30 years ahead on *anything* for a certainty, or that any kind of progress would piss off the Taliban?
That they shouldn't plan ahead because it might piss off the Taliban. I know its hard for Cass to admit she was wrong, but come on, this is getting a bit ridiculous. She explicitly said that it would be a 'problem' because it'll piss of the Taliban.
