So who else has done this or does do it? I just went to my first action shooting match this weekend with my queen of misery and I gotta saw that we are going back for more. This is so much better than standing at a line and punching holes in paper.

The scenario was you are pumping gas at the station, which aint in the best part of town. Your SO goes inside to buy some soda. All of a sudden you hear shots fired and realize that its not just one guy robbing the place but a gang. Your mission is to eliminate the bad guys and go into the store and rescue your SO. The targets are a combination of paper targets (they get double taps) and steel reactive targets. As you leave your vehicle you see two bad guys (one paper, one steel) about 5 yards in front of you. Next stage, to the right at about 20 yards and forward 5 yards, is two steel targets. Then its forward 10 yards and you have two steels and two papers. Then its to the right another 20 yards and forward another 5. This is a hostage situation. You shoot the one steel and that activate the hostage holder (a swinging target). You have to put two rounds into it with out hitting the hostage.

For a n00b I felt I did pretty well. Problems I ran into were two FTFs. I have no idea whats going on, but I'm assuming it was the ammo (Georgia Arms, .40, 165 gr). The only problem with that is that my lovely bride runs the same gun (Beretta PX4) and ammo and didnt have any problems. Then again I had a similar problem the week earlier using some crap fiocchi ammo. The top of the feed ramp looks a little chewed, but then again so does hers. Im gonna try with some different ammo. Next thing is I have got to work on my magazine changes. Talk about a cluster fuck. Finally my technique was good per the RSO, and all of my shots were center mass, though you can forget MOA, we're talking closer to HOA accuracy. Still they were all enough to kill or disable and all were center mass. I just have to work on making it faster and getting my shot groups tighter in that situation.

I was very impressed with La Commandata's performance. She is cross eyed dominant so that was a concern. But she has learned that though her point of aim is center mass, the point of impact tends to be around the groin of the targets. So she used some old fashioned Kentucky windage, aimed for the head, and was getting center mass shots. The only miss she had she immediately corrected and nailed the target. Once again, all of her shots were center mass, but the groups were closer to HOA than MOA

So anyone else done this? What are your impressions?

I'd like to get into IDPA, but there aren't many ranges suitable around here for it. I was talking with a guy at a gun shop about forming a team, but I don't think there's that much interest in the area. Around here folks are either into deer & turkey hunting only or they're yuppies too afraid of guns to learn about them. :(

I've done a half-assed improvised Army version, but it wasn't realistic like wha you did. It sounds awesome. I'd probably use a revolver just because they never jam and I'm more comfortable using them.

There's a 3-gun that shoots around here about once a month. Never been, though.

Yeah, my wife's feed ramp is a little chewed too.
    :rimshot:

Anyhoo, yes, I shot an IPSC match once and came out dead average with a 49.5% score. I must have done good mag changes, though, 'cause I remember the gallery gasping when I did a nice fast one after running dry once.

I found the choreography hard to remember - first shoot this guy here, then step over here and shoot this guy here, then... Do I look like a dancer?

Can't say I didn't have fun, but it's still not as much fun as going to the landfill with friends and some old appliances that need shooting. Unsupervised, without rangemasters telling you they don't like the way you safe your gun.

A "New Jersey Feed Ramp" could replace the "Cleveland Steamer", "Rusty Trombone" etc. in sex lingo you know. :)

For as much fun as 3 gun looks, it also looks to be uber expensive.

However there is a carbine match next weekend and depending how the hurricane / tropical storm blows on Tuesday/Wednesday I may just go.

I try to hold similar events for my guys at least a couple times a year. The one weakness I've found with IDPA/IPSC is really two fold.

#1 - What Forbin hinted at, it's all carefully choreographed.
#2 - It doesn't teach you how to present yourself to your targets.

Now, it's a better training aid than most people will ever get. But, just so long as you understand going into it that you're not getting the whole picture, you should be fine.

Good points. Since this wasnt an IDPA or IPSC match, but a private club function some of the things they stressed was using cover and concealment, shooting with your support arm disabled and weak sided shooting. But you still have the problem with the 'course' being a known entity.

It's like playing Doom over and over - you know just when that fucking demon thing is gonna pop up.

Either that or you lose points 'cause you can't remember the damn dance steps. Oh, I was supposed to move two steps to the right and shoot twice? Was it twice? Wait, is it two shots to the hostage taker, and THEN the pepper popper? Urrrgh.

The day I shot was shortly after the Bernie Goetz thing, so they set up a subway scenario.

Shooter sits in a chair reading a paper. At the signal, he stands, draws and double-taps four targets, then the pepper popper to end it.

One guy, at the signal, as he dropped the paper and drew, yelled "25 cents?! I'LL give ya 25 cents!!" BAMBAM BAMBAM...
