Here's a bit of funky Jesus criticism from some forty years back! [YT="King Herods Song"]YaiuIMZNZkU&NR=1[/YT] And funkier still - [YT="Jesus Christ Superstar"]5AIRBpW1drE[/YT] Regardless of disposition both are definitely worth a view and a listen.
I hate to say "what were they thinking" but..... I do remember when I was a kid everyone was talking about it or buying the soundtrack. Now it seems campy in a Mel Brooks "Springtime For Hitler" way. BTW King Herod - you might want to switch to light beer, if they had it back in 1973, or just plain Year 3 would be more accurate I guess.
Thing is the music is actually pretty darn good, especially the second link. Just some flat out funky fun from the seventies, complete with big white afros, bell bottoms, and leather tassels. Definitely worth at least one viewing.
What I hated were the copycat versions: The adult film version - Jesus Christ Superstud And what about the Disney bomb Jesus Christ Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Or the indy movie filmed on a low budget at an all-you-can-eat buffet Jesus Christ Supperstar
I've always loved this movie. The music kicks ass, and the outfits are far out, man! Great early 70's schlock. But what I loved most about the movie is that they filmed it on location in Israel amongst the old ruins. They just revived JCS recently here on Broadway and gave it a modern, urban setting and it's just not the same. There's something intriguing about the country and being in the middle of where everything happened. My two favorite songs.... I still listen to the soundtrack regularly. One of my all-time favorite musicals. How 'bout that from an agnostic? I think maybe, because it presents Jesus more as a human being than a deity.
Didn't Godspell (another Jesus musical) come out about this time? Jesus got a lot of work in the 70's. So far this decade he can't get arrested.
Every piece of music composed from 1970 to 1979 could be indelibly erased from this frame of reference with no negative effects.
Springsteen, Blondie, Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac, The Pretenders, Joan Jett, Tom Petty, The Eagles, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Meat Loaf....
Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Chicago, Rare Earth, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart....
This stupid ass comment is worth a thread all by itself. Skin posts like a maniac but when he post something stupid like this......he's ghost!!
Pound-for-pound the seventies dominated over all other decades. Rock, Pop, Soul, Funk.....an incredible output of material that stands the test of time.
I think it was marathon who once posted that just about every genre of music reached its pinacle in the 70s. I can't say I disagree with him.
The first one isn't worth inflicting on a torture subject let alone listening for pleasure. As oldfella said it's reminiscent of Mel Brooks trying to be bad for laughs. The second one is fine.
If I thought he was serious I'd have to nominate that as the single most stupid thing ever posted in the history of Wordforge.
Not classical. It either hasn't peaked yet or it peaked back when garamet was a youngster. (Fuck Shoenburg's later output and 12-tone rows) Jazz... an argument could be made.
If we are talking Jewish musicals, Fiddler on the Roof FTW! TRADITION!!!!! Man, I grew up on this film. It was my mother's bizarre way of somehow getting in touch with her Jewish heritage. As a consequence, years later I took her to see a production of it on the stage in London, featuring Topol. It was fantastic.
Love both Fidler and JCSS. Jesus was a hot topic I the 70s because half the men out and about looked like him.
Wouldn't fly these days. My neighborhood Homeowners Association covenant prohibits live musical performances on any elevate surface higher than 80 inches above the ground....unless accompanied by a bunny weighing less than 15 pounds.
My wife and I agree that our next home WILL NOT be in a fucking "cookie cutter" subdivision. Don't get me started!
Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Foghat, Deep Purple, Molly Hatchet...
I don't know about that. Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea (Return to Forever), Flora Purim, Dexter Wanzel, George Duke, Deodato, Jean Luc Ponty....just to name a few. The stuff they did in the 70's?? FOR. GET. ABOUT. IT!!!!!
mid-forties to mid-sixties is my favorite jazz period. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane were ON FIRE!
Taking notes on the musical recommendations. You didn't think I posted that band-pride-bait without a pen and notepad handy, do ya? On the other hand, first one of you who pretends to like Ram-Jam is gonna get mailed a punch in the eye.
