I remember AJ getting shouty when he confronted Michelle Malkin some years ago. He started out calm enough but eventually got worked up and lost the head. [yt=Here's the video of that]i-DoxqvqjxM[/yt] I don't think he's craaaaaaazzzzy, just extremely passionate about perceived evil. Some of his beliefs are ridiculous, while some of them seem chillingly, possibly true. Unfortunately most people dismiss everything he says out of hand, on account of his wilder ideas.
Actually it's very important that he does. Not because he's representative, of course, but because gun-rights people need to be forced to confront the reality that there are a lot of really crazy people out there who really want guns and really need to be kept far away from them for their own and everyone else's safety. Anyone who doesn't admit that Alex Jones should never be allowed anywhere near a gun is ipso facto a crank, and it's the failure of gun-rights advocates to try to "grab" guns from the Alex Joneses of the world that hurts the gun rights movement far more than merely having Jones as an advocate.
Do you believe in the New World Order MF? To me, what is dismissable about him, and what showed in his interview with Morgan, is that he is not interested in debate. That is irrespective of his views. He has made up his mind on what he believes and now sees it as his duty to brow beat it into others (much like Dayton). He is not interested in fielding questions and debating the issues he talks of. That is why he has no credibility, irrespective of whether or not some of his remarks are fact based.
So what are the gun-rights advocates supposed to do about it? If Jones hasn't been deamed mentally defective, isn't a drug abuser, and isn't a felon, what would you suggest? That they steal his guns? break his trigger finger?
Just let him keep talking. And bring as many of his fellows to the fore as possible and let them keep talking. If these are the people you're comfortable with representing the American gun-owner, fine. If not, then what can you do about it?
They can do the same thing that many ask of Moslems who aren't terrorists. Speak out loudly and frequently to point out that he is not the face of responsible gun ownership.
That they acknowledge that we need stricter gun regulations than "you can't have a gun if you're a felon or civilly committed." Alex Jones may not need to be civilly committed, but he's certainly someone who is paranoid and delusional with a violent streak and can't reasonably be expected to be a responsible gun owner. He's proudly and publicly a nut with an itchy trigger finger. If the thought of him with a gun doesn't scare the ever living bejesus out of you then there's something wrong with you. If you don't support laws that keep guns out of the hands of the Alex Joneses of the world then you are part of the reason why gun-control advocates see gun-rights advocates as cranks who refuse to treat guns like dangerous tools. Gun rights, in a sane society, are not coextensive with the 13th Amendment right to not be a slave.
Is that your opinion or a medical diagnosis? See I agree with you that the guy is a hot head. But that is a world apart from someone who is mentally ill. Remember all those folks who were bitching and moaning about "Emperor Bush" and the like. They come across as equally kooky. But does either reach the definition of being mentally ill to where they are a danger to themselves or each other?
He didn't. He didn't even get an answer to any of his questions. To compare Jones to an irrational, paranoid blowhard is hardly taking the bait. It's stating fact.
What kind of law would you suggest that would "keep guns out of the hands of the Alex Joneses of the world"? Make it illegal to purchase or own a gun if you've gota big mouth? If you're disagreeable? If you're a conspiracy theorist? What? How would we legislate guns out of the hands of the Alex Joneses?
Silence betokens consent. Whereas you spend your time nitpicking everything non-gun owners say instead of, for example, wondering why some states don't require registration. Because guns never cross state lines, do they? You want to nitpick something, focus your energies there.
I'd never even heard of this guy before he showed up on Morgan's show. Have you seen the "What a nut" type comments from gun owners in this thread? Or are you talking about a bigger venue?
^Bigger venue. And now that you have heard about him? It's not as if you've never heard of Wayne LaPierre. Ever tell him how you feel about him?
Yes, I do. When his minions call to extort money, I tell them that I'm saving that money to buy more guns.
It seems to me a lot of gun owners are very much in the same place as "moderate" Muslims: they don't support the radicals, but have just enough fear and suspicion of the government/infidels that they can't bring themselves to denounce them..either for fear of being branded apostates or not wanting to be seen as stabbing their "brothers" in the back.
Well shit, by that standard all the questions you keep weaving and dodging is plenty of answer. Thanks for the clarification. Oh and yeah there was what, 2 hours between the time you posted that question and the time he answered. Yeah I know, an eternity.
