It can be argued that literary characters have some leeway depending on the author's description. But comic/cartoon characters are defined by how the creator (who is most times the artist) draws them. If the author wanted s black woman, she'd have been drawn as one.

Funny thing is "black people" haven't been the ones pushing for more diversity within the Marvel/DC universes. That's come from the creators, the studios and the publishers that realize there are more people reading comics than mouth breather teen boys along various points on the autism spectrum and they want to reach out to those people accordingly.

They'd do well to add more unique characters of color into new stories as well, but it's a start.

All art is meant to provoke a response. Race- and gender-switching of established characters is just the flavor of the week.

As for Nick Fury, I'm not a big comic nerd so I never knew the character was originally white. But SLJ had the chops for the role, so most people got over it.

Anyone who says we can colorblind cast every role ever is as stupid as people who say we can never deviate from what's been shown on screen for X number of years.

The other difference is that white people are in absolutely NO danger of being erased from Hollywood.

The reason whitewashing gets such a negative reaction is that since Hollywood has historically offered so few good roles for nonwhite actors, taking one of the rare exceptions and giving it to a white actor looks like a slap in the face. Turning Nick Fury into a black guy does not have the same effect.

It reminds me of my aunt''s exasperation when "Amistad" came out, and rolled her eyes at yet another Hollywood movie depicting slavery as though that is the only part of our history. Being a young kid at the time, I didn't get it, but as media has become more diverse and I've gotten older, I can get why it pissed her off.

Those movies weren't for black people's entertainment.

As much shit as I give Tyler Perry because he really is mediocre at best, he at least tries to make movies that show black folks and black men especially in a good light.
