Not sure who else follows Marvel Comics these days, but the last issue of Amazing Spider-Man (Marvel's longest running title) comes out in two days. To be honest, I haven't followed Marvel Comics regularly for years and I gave up on Spider-Man after the 'One More Day' storyline when they retconned Peter and MJ's marriage out of existence and brought Harry Osborn back to life. Anyway, I thought I'd check out the final issue for old times' sake. Not released yet but managed to read through it anyway MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!! [spoilers] Doctor Octopus is close to death due to a disease which has been ravaging his body for months. He body swaps with Peter Parker. In the final issue, Peter (in Doc Ock's body) attempts to reverse the body swap but is unsuccessful. Peter Parker is dead and Doc Ock is now the new Spider-Man (with Peter's body and all of his memories). And no one knows about it. Interestingly, Peter Parker is now dead in both the Ultimate Marvel Universe and the mainstream Marvel Universe. [/spoilers] Personally, I doubt this will be a permanent change but who knows? They've fucked with Spider-Man's history so much already, nothing would surprise me. Probably just a marketing stunt that will get reversed a few years from now (or if fans bitch about it enough) The new flagship Spider-Man title going forward will be 'The Superior Spider-Man'.
Yeah, I heard about this. It sounds fucking awful. Why not just retire the original Spidey and let this new character take over the title?
Hell, I more of less bailed on Spider-Man during all that clone nonsense years ago. I've pretty much given up on new comics in general, there's just no sense of fun in them anymore.
All-Star Superman was great a few years ago, but it was only a miniseries. I'm sure there's other stuff out there, but nothing comes to mind right away. I'm told Ultimate Spiderman is/was pretty good as well. A lot less convoluted, for the most part.
Considering how awful Spider-Man has been since day one, is this any surprise? I'll stick with DC Comics, thank you very much.
