It is what might very loosely be called a legal drama where a guy who has never been to college or law school pretends to be a graduate of Harvard Law school to get hired by a prestigious New York City law firm that prides itself on hiring ONLY Harvard graduates. The guy Mike Ross (well played by Patrick J. Adams) does this when one of the rising stars in the law firm Harvey Spector (well played by Gabriel Macht) decides to hire him after "accidentally" interviewing him while Ross is fleeing from the police during a drug deal. Spector is ordered to hire a Harvard Law grad as his assistant (something he deeply resents) and after seeing how smart and clever (and in need of money) Mike Ross is decides to hire him and basically tells him to fake it. It isn't clear why Harvey does this but it seems kind of an "f-you" to his own law firm for making him take on an assistant in the first place. Of course after hiring something without a law degree and presenting him as an actual lawyer, Harvey, and later Jessica Pearson the name partner in the firm played by Gina Torres, can't go back otherwise they will be as guilty as Mike Ross is. The show has been around for five years now with the season finale finally showing the secret catch up with Mike Ross and him being sent to prison for two years for fraud. But what I've always loved about "Suits" is that they spend virtually no time in the courtroom. Courtroom appearances are very rare. Instead they spend more time in the huge law library at the firm looking for precedents they can use and other information.
By the way, series lead actor Gabriel Macht's father Stephen was Gene Roddenberry's first choice to play Picard on TNG.
Donna presents a compelling case for watching. Hubba. But that said it's very good. I'm surprised Dayton likes it given the main character is a former junkie, but then he does lie/omit stuff on his resume to get a job, so there are some parallels...
I wasn't aware "junkie" had a specific connotation with heroin, I've only ever seen it (particularly on CSI) used as a catch-all for drug users in general. Mike smokes/smoked pot quite frequently.
I remember he had a couple of times with his friend and roommate Trevor but it never showed he was an addict. I think you pretty much have to be addicted to drugs to be called a "junkie".
I've never personally heard "junkie" to refer to anything other than a heroin addict (and heroin itself referred to as "junk"), but I can see how it could have been genericized to mean "addict" in general. Come to think of it, my friend Scott is a thrill seeker and calls himself an "adrenaline junkie", so I get that. Nevertheless, I am used to the word "druggie" as a generic term for those into drugs.
Finally getting around to watching this series. I woukldn’t characterize the main character as an addict. And if you follow the series, he wasn’t even really a criminal. He was written as the kind of person who is unusual in his integrity and loyalty. He took the fall twice in his life to keep his friends out of prison. Not a lot of people would do that. The catch of the series is “will he get caught or not”. That storyline is old by the third season. Then you get to the point where Ross and Spector become younger versions of Spader and Shatner and the interactions and bromance is humorous and heartwarming. Finally, the last season still carries the same drama and witty repartee after Gina Torres, Meghan Markle, and Patrick Adams leave.
It has been a while since I've watched Suits, but Mike Ross is indeed a criminal. Maybe his crimes are forgivable, understandable or semi-victimless. Maybe it's OK since he had a heart of gold and was committing crimes for good reasons and/or with good outcomes for the most part. But at least within the scope of the Suits universe, he is a criminal several times over. 1. He took the LSAT for people to boost their scores, which is a form of fraud. 2. He was a drug dealer in his pre-lawyer life. 3. By claiming to be a Harvard Law grad when he hadn't even finished college and feigning being a qualified attorney, Mike committed an additional crime, at least within the Suits universe. It feels strange to have spoilers for a series that has been over for five years but...
Mods, Can this thread be moved to Media Central? My bad, I just searched forums because I didn’t want to create a new thread, but since it’s clearly not Red Room material, please move it before WAB’s head explodes.
