N.J. hotline to report priest sex abuse overwhelmed by number of callers

A New Jersey hotline set up to report abuse by priests has had no shortage of callers who have stories of alleged abuse to tell, officials say.

A week after the state Attorney General's office launched a special task force to investigate allegations of sexual abuse within the Catholic dioceses of New Jersey, a dedicated call-in center to allow victims to speak with investigators has been all but overwhelmed.

"The hotline has been receiving a high volume of calls -- such that additional staff was assigned to receive calls -- and some of the calls are reporting multiple victims of abuse," acknowledged Peter Aseltine, a spokesman for the Division of Criminal Justice.

Indeed, some have complained they have had trouble getting through.

Aseltine, who would not disclose how many calls have been received, said the state has taken steps to ensure that the hotline is adequately staffed. Calls yesterday to the toll-free number, (855) 363-6548, were being answered almost immediately.

In an interview with NPR, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said the response underscored the need to have hotlines across the country, "because I am certain that this abuse, given the pattern and practices that the Pennsylvania report identified, was not limited to the Northeast."

The move by New Jersey to set up a task force and hotline was taken in the wake of the explosive Pennsylvania grand jury report released in August, which detailed in graphic terms the sex abuse by hundreds of priests who had preyed upon children for decades.

The report sparked a national outcry, with the attorneys general of Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico and New York all taking steps to investigate sex abuse by Catholic priests in their individual states.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said the two-year probe found a systematic cover-up by senior church officials. "The cover-up was sophisticated. And all the while, shockingly, church leadership kept records of the abuse and the cover-up," he said.

In one case, one priest who decided to quit after years of child abuse complaints, asked for, and received, a letter of reference for a job at Walt Disney World.

Advocates in New Jersey have long complained that secrecy within the church has keep the stories of victims here from being told, and applauded the state's establishment of a task force, which will have subpoena power through a grand jury to compel testimony and demand the production of documents.

Sen. Joseph Vitale, D-Middlesex, who has been pushing to eliminate New Jersey's limits on civil lawsuits involving child sex abuse complaints against priests, said the hotline has given voice to survivors forced into silence for years.

"I've been working on this issue for 20 years or more, and have met dozens and dozens of survivors. Some have never talked about it before," he said. "I'm not surprised they want to let law enforcement know what happened to them."

He expects many of those calls have been long and emotional, recalling a conversation with one victim who he said is now reliving the trauma as a result of the renewed public attention, and is having a hard time coping.

"It doesn't go away," said Vitale.

Phillipsburg attorney Greg Gianforcaro, who has brought many sexual abuse cases against the church over the years, said a number of those he has represented have already called the hotline. At the same time, he expressed little surprise that the volume of calls has been substantially greater than expected.

"I predict that the findings from New Jersey's grand jury report will expose even more abuse than Pennsylvania's report has," he said.

Mark Crawford, the state director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said he had anticipated there could well be a great many calls to the state's hotline.

"I suspect they are getting many calls from victims throughout the country who once lived here as a youngster and experienced clergy sexual abuse at that time," he said. "I know this as I myself have received many calls -- far more than the regular volume of survivors reaching out. Some in their 70's who stated they had never spoken to someone, anyone of their abuse before now."

Pope’s role in study of Argentine sex abuse case draws fire

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Pope Francis’ role in Argentina’s most famous case of priestly sex abuse is coming under renewed scrutiny as he faces the greatest crisis of his papacy over the Catholic Church’s troubled legacy of cover-up and allegations that he himself sided with the accused.

Francis, who at the time was still Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in 2010 commissioned a four-volume, 2,000-plus page forensic study of the legal case against a convicted priest that concluded he was innocent, that his victims were lying and that the case never should have gone to trial.

The Argentine church says that the study obtained by The Associated Press - bound volumes complete with reproductions of Johannes Vermeer paintings on the covers - was for internal church use only. But the volumes purportedly ended up on the desks of some Argentine court justices who were ruling on the appeals of Father Julio Grassi.

Despite the study, Argentina’s Supreme Court in March 2017 upheld the conviction and 15-year prison sentence against Grassi, a celebrity priest who ran homes for street children across Argentina.

The study, and Francis’ role in the Grassi case, have taken on new relevance following allegations by a former Vatican ambassador that Francis, and a long line of Vatican officials before him, covered up the sexual misconduct of a prominent U.S. cardinal.

Neither Francis nor the Vatican has responded to the allegations that Francis rehabilitated ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick from sanctions in 2013. The Vatican didn’t respond to a request for comment about Francis’ role in the Grassi case.

In an exclusive interview with AP, Grassi’s victim, Gabriel, said he is still waiting for Francis to acknowledge his pain, given the Supreme Court has now ruled that he indeed was assaulted by Grassi when he was 13.

“I’d like for the church to say something, even though I don’t expect it will,” Gabriel told AP, sitting next to his psychiatrist. “No one ever reached out to me,” he said. “No one bothered.”

Francis, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires, wasn’t Grassi’s bishop and bore no direct responsibility for him. But in 2006, he was quoted by the now-defunct Argentine magazine Veintitres as saying the accusations against Grassi were “informative viciousness against him, a condemnation by the media.”

He said he would withhold judgment pending the outcome of the court case, but Grassi himself testified that Bergoglio had “never let go of my hand” throughout the legal process.

Under Bergoglio’s presidency, Argentina’s bishops conference in 2010 enlisted a leading Argentine criminal defense attorney, Marcelo Sancinetti, to research a counter-inquiry into the prosecutors’ case against Gabriel and two other former residents of Grassi’s Happy Children homes whose cases were thrown out in the initial trial.

In the study, Sancinetti concluded that not only weren’t the accusations against Grassi sufficiently proven, “the falsity of each one of the accusations is objectively verifiable.”

In the four tomes, which were produced at an annual clip from 2010-2013, Sancinetti accused Gabriel of changing his story and trying to extort Grassi. But a court years earlier had already thrown out a lawsuit filed by Grassi accusing Gabriel of extortion.

Sancinetti compared the “current trials and condemnations with severe sentences based exclusively on the word of a person who calls itself victim of sexual abuse to the trials for witchcraft of the Middle Ages.” And in the final volume and on his law firm’s website, Sancinetti said Francis in particular had commissioned the work. He didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

Argentina’s Supreme Court disagreed with Sancinetti’s analysis, and on March 21, 2017, upheld Grassi’s 2009 conviction for having sexually abused and corrupted Gabriel.

Through tears, Gabriel had testified that on two separate occasions in 1996 the priest once fondled him, and then performed oral sex on him in his office.

Gabriel, who for a time was placed in Argentina’s witness protection program after suffering a break-in, physical attacks and threats, said he was shocked when Grassi testified that Bergoglio “had never let go of my hand.”

“We were all like ‘wow!’ It was Bergoglio,” he said.

Gabriel said he and his lawyer delivered a letter addressed to Francis two months after he was elected Latin America’s first pope, bringing it to the Vatican embassy in Buenos Aires on May 8, 2013.

In the letter, Gabriel identified himself as a victim of “aberrant crimes of repeated sexual abuse and corruption” by Grassi.

He lamented that court-protected details of his abuse had been exposed by the study, which he said had “denigrated” him personally and contradicted the stated “zero tolerance” policy of both Pope Benedict XVI and Francis.

“I suffered and continue to suffer,” he wrote.

He asked for an audience with the pope “and I earnestly beg you for compassion and help in recovering my faith.”

He never received a reply. In fact, his lawyer said they were threatened at the embassy and don’t know what became of the letter.

Asked why the Argentine bishops conference had commissioned the study, a conference spokeswoman said it was to help bishops understand the case better.

“The bishops conference considered that it could provide more information in view of the canonical procedure,” the conference said in a statement to AP.

Such a study, however, would be unthinkable for use in a canonical trial. While church trials do make use of police investigations and evidence from secular courts, a counter-study commissioned by an entire bishops’ conference could run into jurisdictional problems at a canonical trial, canonists said.

In addition, Gabriel’s attorney, Juan Pablo Gallego, said the books ended up on the desks of some Argentine judges deciding Grassi’s appeals and represented what he called a blatant, albeit unsuccessful lobbying attempt.

The diocese of Moron, which was responsible for Grassi, had long defended its decision to keep him in ministry even after the trial began by saying it didn’t want to prejudice the outcome.

Eighteen months after Argentina’s high court ruled against him, Grassi remains a priest as he serves his 15-year sentence in the Unidad 41 de Campana prison in the province of Buenos Aires.

The Moron diocese said Grassi had been removed from pastoral duties when the trial began, and that he now has been restricted from exercising any public ministry. The diocese told AP that the canonical case is now with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican office that handles sex abuse cases.

Julieta Anazco, president of Argentina’s Survivors’ Network of Ecclesiastical Abuse, said the Grassi case was a watershed for Argentina since the victims went up against a celebrity priest who had the backing of Argentina’s Catholic elite, and suffered the public humiliation of being accused of only seeking money.

“They have made the path of our struggle easier for us,” she said. “Thanks to their struggle, many of us were encouraged to denounce (our abusers) publicly.”

She cited the recent case of hearing-impaired victims of the now-notorious Antonio Provolo Institute who came forward to denounce abuse by the same Italian priest accused by Italian Provolo students who in 2014 alerted Francis and the Vatican to his whereabouts. Argentine police have arrested Father Nicola Coradi and raided Provolo schools.

“Before Pope Francis can enact accountability for bishops and other church leaders, he has to own up to the harm he himself caused victims in Argentina,” said Anne Barrett Doyle of the online resource Bishop Accountability, which has gathered the documentation on the Grassi saga.

The case has parallels to that in neighboring Chile, where Francis repeatedly defended a bishop accused of covering up for the country’s most notorious predator, the Rev. Fernando Karadima. Francis discredited Karadima’s victims, who placed Bishop Juan Barros at the scene of their abuse, saying their accusations were “calumny.”

Francis eventually acknowledged he had made “grave errors in judgment” about Barros, apologized to the victims and launched a Vatican investigation that resulted in all of Chile’s active bishops offering to resign.

He has offered no mea culpa about the Grassi case. Gabriel, who works odd jobs off the books and has no credit card, is waiting.

“I’m Catholic, but yes, there are moments when I don’t know if the church represents me.”

Texas Catholic dioceses plan to name all priests 'credibly accused' of sex abuse since 1950, Dallas bishop says

All Catholic dioceses in Texas will release the names of every clergy member since 1950 to be "credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors," Dallas Bishop Edward Burns said Wednesday.

Dioceses will publish the names by Jan. 31, Burns said, and the lists will be updated as new information becomes available.

The extraordinary undertaking comes at a time when the Catholic Church in Dallas and around the world is under increasing pressure to address its ongoing sexual abuse crisis.

"I truly believe this is the first time an entire state has bound together in order to release names," Burns said.

The bishop said the church wants to "protect our children, create a safe environment, to promote healing for those who've been abused, and to demonstrate that we are focused on facing this issue."

Clergy abuse problems have roiled the church for years and flared up again in recent months. In August, a scathing Pennsylvania grand jury report revealed that at least 1,000 children were victims of sex abuse by priests over the past seven decades and that the church hierarchy either turned a blind eye or actively engaged in cover-ups. That same month, the Dallas Diocese announced that an Oak Cliff priest credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors had gone missing.

Burns said he owed transparency "to the faithful of the Diocese of Dallas."

"And more importantly I owe it to those who've been abused and their families," he said.

The investigation
The decision for all 15 dioceses in Texas to release the files was made Sept. 30 during a meeting of the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops.

The investigation to come up with the names represents a major undertaking. Statewide, the church serves 8.5 million Catholics in 1,320 parishes. The Dallas Diocese alone counts 1.3 million Catholics in 74 parishes.

"As you can imagine, going back to 1950 and doing this statewide, it is an arduous task. It's going to take some time," Burns said.

The Dallas Diocese hired a team of six outside investigators made up of former FBI agents, former Texas state troopers and other law enforcement experts to examine its priests' files. The group has done similar work for other Catholic dioceses around the country and is in "high demand right now," Burns said.

Burns said the investigation began in February with the files of seminarians and deacon candidates along with active priests in the diocese.

Asked to explain the definition of "credibly accused," Burns said the term means "that we would believe it is true that an abuse has taken place." Burns said even without a criminal conviction, an investigation can determine if the accuser is telling the truth.

The criteria for what constitutes a credible accusation will be the same across the state, Burns said.

"When we bring forth our list, we will also bring forth that criteria," he said.

Burns declined to estimate how many priests could be on the list. But he said he could "assure you that there are no priests in any parish in this diocese who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor."

Burns predicted that some names would be familiar to Dallas-area Catholics.

"This diocese has gone through some very difficult days and you're going to see some of those names repeated," Burns said. Other names, he said, "will be a surprise to people."

The Diocese of Fort Worth has been making public the names of credibly-accused clergy since 2005, according to a letter released by the office of Bishop Michael F. Olson. In 2007, the Fort Worth Diocese became the first in Texas to publish on it website the names of the credibly-accused priests, a list that is updated as needed.

The list currently contains the names of 15 priests, a deacon and a religious brother. The list is available on the diocese's Safe Environment page.

Allegations at St. Cecelia
The investigation of Dallas-area priests comes about two months after Edmundo Paredes, the former pastor at St. Cecelia in Oak Cliff, was accused of abusing three boys more than a decade ago.

Burns publicly announced the allegations against Paredes in an address at Masses on Aug. 18 and 19 at St. Cecilia. Paredes, who was also accused of theft of church funds, was pastor of the parish from 1990 to 2017.

The diocese has not heard from Paredes since March, and private investigators haven't been able to find him. Burns said Wednesday that he believes Paredes returned to the Philippines, his native country.

The church now takes multiple steps when an allegation is made against a priest or other member of the ministry, Burns said: Law enforcement is notified, other church leaders offer assistance to the victim, and the allegations are reviewed by the Diocesan Review Board, made up of nonclergy Catholics including doctors, clinical psychologists, lawyers, parents and others.

After examining the allegations, the board offers an opinion on their credibility.

Town hall meetings
Burns' announcement Wednesday came after he disclosed the investigation of active priests during a Tuesday service that kicked off an extraordinary month of town halls across the diocese to address the sex-abuse crisis. For Tuesday's town hall, Burns returned to St. Cecilia.

Several hundred people attended the town hall, which started with a Ceremony of Sorrow service. During the ceremony, the bishop prostrated himself on the ground for several minutes as a sign of humility and penance.

In prepared remarks, Burns blamed "a small but significant number of clerics who preyed on children and young people" and church leaders who didn't stop them.

"The failure of too many of my brother bishops to protect the children by covering up the crimes of the perpetrators and rebuffing victims who came forward has scandalized the Catholic faithful and the public at large," he said.

"As your shepherd, I apologize," he said.

Burns noted that the sex-abuse crisis had "driven many of the faithful out of the church entirely."

Brian and Aubrey Flaherty were among those who came to hear the bishop's response to the sex-abuse scandal. The couple attend St. Monica Catholic Church in North Dallas. "There obviously needs to be a cleanup," said Brian Flaherty. "That needs to happen."

But the scandal hasn't tempted the couple to leave the Catholic Church.

"The doctrine is pure and true," Aubrey Flaherty said. "The problems are with the church, not the faith."

Let us skip the thoughts and prayers and go right to investigation and prosecution. We should also go with a little more stop bringing your children to these people until they start putting in measures to record and secure your children's safety. It is not hard to make a big dent superpope. You get a video camera in all private areas and you do not let anyone alone with the children. Then you have a zero tolerance policy and enforce the hell out of any violation and make sure to back investigations with evidence and assistance for the authorities.

The most revealing part of that story is that he didn't say "as a good Catholic," but rather "as a good Catholic male."

This wasn't just a religious thing ... this was him asserting that, as a man, he had both a right and an obligation to control this woman's actions.

AWESOME! I kind of wish daddy himself killed the sick fucker, but then again what if he fucked it up? I guess hiring professionals was the smart play. And when they "investigate" the dad I hope he gets off with a 100 euro fine just to make it official. Good work dad! I hope this spreads to the US with a quickness. One down, thousands to go, but it's a start!
