Link Not that I've utilized the program, but it seems this was initially blow out of proportion on the military side. There are still many programs available to get soldiers through their education such as Montgomery/Post 9-11 GI Bill. Is anyone here personally affected by this cut?
Something something sequester something how else will Obama pay for his Wookie's vacations something blah.
It's not across the board spending cuts? They're not limited in determining what to cut by what's already been spent thus far?
Uh, no. They've been limited in money available. When they can, they're rearranging spending to best suit political needs.
The tuition assistance is for active duty soldiers attending college courses while serving, not for college when they return to civilian life (which is covered under other programs). I took some college while I was serving - it was a great program. Thank goodness they didn't cut education for low income illegal aliens (or whatever they are called this week).
Good thing Obama-ho-tep still managed to find $250 million dollars to send to the Muslim Brotherhood.
So how many cuts were made to missile defense systems, warplanes and such before they went down to tuition assistance?
This shit is ridiculous. Around here, they're cutting the hours of the liberty centers till after 4 pm...which sees like a minor thing, unless you're one of those new saliors in the barracks that has no Internet set up or a printer. But all that said...what minor cuts. How about cutting Congressional pay by five percent first before throwing the military and teachers and firefighters under the bus?
Forbin works for a defense contractor, he's mentioned several times there had been layoffs. Oldfella's said the same, but I'm not entirely sure if he's with a defense contractor or not. Regardless, I'd wager there'd be some costly penalties involved if the Fed tried to back out of some of the more expensive procurement contracts. Not to mention the hysterical shrieking from the righties about Obama "leaving American defenseless."
When private companies have to make cuts, they try to MINIMIZE pain to their customers. When a bureaucracy has to make cuts, it tries to MAXIMIZE pain to its clients. Thomas Sowell explains it.
I work as a contractor supporting an Army Base, so I guess that's under the defense contractor umbrella. A lot of these long term contracts are already pre-paid if you will. That said, once that contract ends, as ours does in September......all bets are off, hold on to your hats! You might need them for holding in your hand as you grovel for any job at the employment office.
The problem is, the legislature is constrained on changing its own salaries. I suspect it was done to make it harder for them to vote themselves a pay raise, but that is backfiring right now of course. If I had my way, I'd just say "You're being paid to produce a budget. No pay for you until you produce a budget." I'd love to say "balanced," but technically they aren't required to produce a balanced budget. And any budget at all would be progress for the Democrats.
We all know what the point of this administration's reaction to spending cuts is. It's to punish us for insisting that they operate within their means. It's to punish us for insisting that they behave responsibly. Who here thinks the Feds get to punish the people?
Its how I was able to afford to go to school and get my associate degree when I was in the Air Force. They would pay as long as you got a 70% or better otherwise you paid it from your own pocket. There was not a GI bill then when I joined. It was a great deal for those who joined a couple years after I did.
I remember when there was a defense cutback in the 80s when I was in the military. There was some reason they had to cut ketchup from the chow hall due to cost but yet golf course on base where the officers played never missed a beat. I bet there are still a lot of bases with golf courses, etc.
There are? The one on my base was turned into privatized housing a long time ago. From what I was once told, golf courses bleed a lot of money since one can only use them for a limited amount of time in the year in colder/wet climates, plus the maintenance of the courses themselves. So I'm sure a lot of those will be going bye-bye before too long.
The Chair Force has joined the other two actual branches of the military in cutting tuition assistance. But, hey, they're a NASCAR sponsor now.
Well, that's another way to cut pay, since you pay senior people more. Of course, Circuit City got rid of its senior people about a year before it kicked the bucket... so...
Meanwhile, DHS has how many billion rounds of ammunition, how many thousand rifles and how many armored vehicles?
