That just reflects the trend of such people to fat fucks, I wager. It can very easily be overcome by getting some exercise outside of work.
Now, the article does say that this factor is independent of all other habits. Didn't seem to matter if you were a sedentary, alcoholic chain-smoker who injects bacon grease directly into your heart.
Fifty-four percent more likely to die of heart attacks as opposed to what? Everyone dies of something. Typical Yahoo! "expert" article. Does it say "people who sit all day die sooner"? No. Just "OMG!!! Heart attack!!!"
There are a whole bunch of factors that contribute to the likelihood of developing heart disease, starting with genetics. Some people can do everything wrong (like that guy in SuperSize Me who eats a Whopper every day and has the cholesterol level of a 12-year-old) and some who can do everything right and still have an MI. Most folks fall somewhere in between. But articles like this one just spread panic among people who are already obsessed with running from one symptom-checker to another thinking they're dying. They make no impression on the fat-asses who should occasionally get up from the keyboard and walk around.
I'm on my feet most of the day, moving around. So, I die in a hail of gunfire instead of a heart attack.....kick ass!
Actually no. I saw another article on the same study (I assume) and the claim was that even with exercise during other parts of the day, the ill effects still exist. Can't say how good the study is of course but that was the claim.
This appeared about a year or so ago in a couple of med journals, and they supposedly factored in things like diet and exercise and still found that people who sit for 8 hours a day are more likely to keel over from heart problems than anything else.
Hmm. I wonder if this affects me. I usually sit down when I work on a patient. But once I'm done with one patient, I'll pace around the clinic waiting for a different assistant to ready up another patient for me to work on. And I usually stand when I'm pulling teeth, I have a better grip and viewing angle that way.
It makes sense...humans (nor any living creature) did not evolve to be sitting down all day. It's just not natural, though sometimes our jobs demand it. BTW I want a job as a mattress tester!
Oh who the hell cares? I'm gonna die of something. And don't give me this sitting on your ass speeds it up shit. Queen Victoria sat crying in mourning for her mother and husband for about what? 40 years (I think?) after Prince Albert and the Duchess of Kent died. By this study's estimates, she should have been by 1880 at the latest not 1901 at 81. If I remember right, she only wore black the rest of her life and rarely left Windsor and Balmoral except when absolutely necessary. Nah uh. I'm convinced longevity is genetic, not environmental.
The men in my family typically only make it to on average 70. (thank God) I'll thank him even more if that "we all die" at the end of 2012 is true.
Again, you pretty much have a choice - heart attack, cancer, stroke, or there's always the stray asteroid. I'd like to see stats on whether or not longevity was affected. Are people more likely to die of an MI 30 years after they've retired and spend the whole day playing bingo at the senior center, or are they dying in their 50s? How much you want to bet my blood pressure's lower than yours? So you're getting cardio and strength training with every bicuspid.
