I was thinking along those lines earlier, but then I remembered we already do it for handguns. Precedent has been set. Just set the same standard for rifles or auto loaders or SBRs or whatever.

That’s a state thing. For years, even as a Police Officer, I thought it was a Federal regulation. But, it’s not. When Alabama consolidated and clarified their gun laws several years ago, that was one of the things that shocked me. The age to buy a handgun and the age to get a permit is 18.

True, but that's for person to person sales. If you're buying from a licensed dealer you have to be 21. That's Federal.

agree with Garamet here - let's get all these agencies on the same sheet of music so we can get the problem solved! All these highly trained people are pulling & pushing against each other and it needs to stop.

Link doesn't work....supposed to be a video from HBO's Real Sports - hidden camera thing with a (admittedly) 13 year old legally buying a rifle at a gun show.

this is a factor too...or is this just another "you don't know nothin' about guns" situation?

yes Nova high velocity rounds can cause severe damage. As for not having to be "particularly accurate"? Completely false.

It's not completely false. It just means you don't have to hit someone center mass or in the "apricot" in order to have a good chance of killing them Dead Right There like you do with a handgun....which is true.

Yes, all high velocity bullets act that way. It's also called "hydrostatic shock" - the body's fluids being blown outward by the shock wave. Something as powerful as a .30'06 can even cause heart failure with a peripheral hit by blowing the blood back thru the arteries into the heart. It's been observed on deer. A 5.56mm/.223 is much less powerful than an '06, but it's still a hi velocity round.

#1 It's a single shot bolt action .22 caliber rifle. It's not a machine gun or a high powered rifle. He'd have to work damn hard to commit mass murder with it.

#2 As it was said in the video it was a legal purchase. HBO Real Sports would have been in legal trouble (along with the seller) if they knowingly let the kid buy a weapon from an illegal sale.

#3 This kid was at the show with an adult. It's just as likely that the dealer sold the gun with the "parents" permission since an adult was with the kid. This is how many kids get their first rifle. Bryant Gumbal is an anti-gun person and like the media has done in the past you can't put it past him and his crew to selectively edit the footage to make the seller look bad. It would be nice to see the unedited footage.

#4 This was not a licensed dealer and under Federal law it is legal to sell such a rifle to a minor. It's also not illegal under Virginia law.

Hydrostatic Shock different from cavitation, and it is hotly debated whether or not it's really a thing. I lean towards it not being a thing. Supposedly, the tool that urologists use to break up kidney stones with sound creates a more powerful shock wave than a high powered bullet can, and it doesn't harm soft tissue.

There ain't no good way to be shot, only degrees of bad.

30mm is pretty bad, IMHO. :diacanu:

    1. I'm aware, misses the point
    2. of course it was legal - which is the problem being illustrated
    3. unless your contention is this purchase would never have happened as displayed, the problem still exists
    4. again the legality is the problem being illustrated

No, for that you need a 16" Mk8 AP or Mk14 HC round.

Nothing quite says, "DIE NOW!" like 2,700lbs of freedom moving at 2,500fps.

I have no problem with gun free zones that heavily screen to make sure they are, actually, gun free zones instead of a stupid liberal wet dream zone.

Oh I see 13 makes more sense, that's the age for squirrel hunting - at 17 most have moved on to deer by then.

What does that mean? What makes a weapon defensive rather than offensive? What is an example of an offensive rather than defensive weapon?

As I said, having the qualities of one makes it good for the other.

There is no good defensive weapon that can't be used for offense as well.
