I think I'm good with this. No, Affleck wouldn't have been my first choice, but he's a credible actor and I think he'll hold up his end of the screen when set against Cavill's Superman. I haven't really seen Affleck do hardcore bad-ass, but he may well surprise everyone. I, too, remember thinking "Mr. Mom?!?" when they cast Keaton, and he turned out to be pretty damned good. I remember thinking that Heath Ledger was a strange choice for the Joker, and he knocked it out of the park.
I really love Affleck, but it's hard to imagine him in that role. However, maybe he brings a little snarky coolness into it. As good as the Nolan movies were, they were too serious for my taste. It's a superhero movie for crying out loud. It's not exactly totally serious business. Anyway, will wait and see. Marvel's onslaught has pretty much diminished my interest for the DC characters. Haven't even seen MoS. Guess that's a BR for me, then.
Affleck does smarm rather than charm, so I think his Wayne may not be so good. He has good acting chops when he's invested in a role, but has a tendency to dial it in a at times so I guess his Batman will depend on that. Risky choice IMO, although I've no doubt the execs saw him as a safe choice - they've gone for a known name rather than a known face. I'll go see it, and I hope it works.
What examples are you guys using in your beliefs that Affleck is a credible actor? He's Ben Affleck in every movie he's in, never the character. Now, I admit that I've not seen Argo so maybe he pulls something out of his ass in that one.
So...who do you think is going to be the rest of the Justice League? Does this alter your choices at all?
Easily Smith's best work since Mallrats. I guess this was inevitable after Bale committed to Real Madrid..
If the next film follows convention, there are actually three roles that would be played by Affleck: 1. Batman, who's intense, angry, scary 2. The real Bruce Wayne, who's broody and somber 3. The "public" Bruce Wayne, who's an arrogant, self-centered douche
I honestly do not know what to think about this. Affleck's either hit or miss for me....mostly miss......there's not much middle ground with the guy. Wish they had of kept the continuity going from the Nolan movies and gone Bale or JGL.
1. This is the one he'll have to impress me with. 2. His Daredevil did that well enough. 3. See Nova's "Boiler Room", clip.
That's because you are not well read on the subject matter. Besides, I don't much care for the words of authority from someone who thinks history produces ghosties and ghoulies.
Aaaannnnd, here we go... http://io9.com/the-50-greatest-tweets-about-ben-afflecks-casting-as-1188521731
Affleck should be able to nail both Bruce Wayne roles. I'm less sure about Barman, but I suspect nobody can really manage all three roles well. You mentioned Dwayne Johnson earlier, who I think would make a fantastic Batman, but a fairly poor Bruce Wayne. It's a tough role, I have an open mind to the idea that Affleck will surprise a lot of people.
There's a film I'd see! The Cirrhosis Crusader, and his sidekick Robin - a giant alcohol-induced hallucination of a bird that 'tweets' 140 character word bubbles. Instead of a Batputer, he'd press clue hashtags in Robins speech bubbles and be taken to new places to solve the crimes of such nemeses as Shit-Faced and the Piddler. You even have a dark bit where he has to battle his way through a German porn shop to defeat Scatwoman...
It's an afflecktion... I am actually liking my Cirrhosis Crusader though. It'd be like re-making Harvey on mescal.
