British lawmaker dies following shooting and stabbing attack that stuns nation



LONDON — A member of Britain’s Parliament was shot and stabbed to death Thursday in an attack that stunned the nation and brought to an immediate halt the country's European Union referendum campaign just a week before the vote.

Police did not provide a motive for the killing. But British media organizations including the Guardian and Sky News quoted witnesses as saying that the assailant shouted "Britain First!" during and after the attack — a slogan linked to anti-immigrant groups.

Police officials in the northern English region of West Yorkshire said Jo Cox, a 41-year-old member of the center-left Labour Party who has been outspoken in advocating for civilian victims in Syria, was pronounced an hour after she was assaulted outside a library near the city of Leeds.

The BBC broadcast a picture that it said showed the moment the suspected assailant was arrested. He appears to be a white male dressed in a gray T-shirt and black pants.


The attack came as the country heads into the homestretch of a campaign to determine whether to stay in the European Union, with a vote scheduled next Thursday.

Both the pro- and anti-E.U. camps announced that they were suspending their campaigns for the day following the attack. Cox was a supporter of keeping Britain in the 28-nation bloc.

Well, according to @Dinner in this thread this was an Islamic terror attack. Well, before he cowardly edited his post. It seems possible that Cox was killed by a person like Dinner because she was a campaigner for Syrians.

It's still rather unclear what happened. Some early reports said that the victim had intervened in a struggle between two men, while others described it an assassination. Now, reports say that the victim was targeted deliberately. It seems that the man involved had a history of mental illness. I expect more details will come out soon.

Interesting. The only place I heard the intervention claim was Britain First's pathetic video response (which they naturally made all about them and not Cox) and as for mental illness, I've only seen that on Twitter. But I reinterate what I said the other day on Twitter, who commits these acts as a lone wolf and isn't mentally ill? Even a mentally ill person can be influenced by hate.

I read it in the BBC report, but they've since changed it. Perhaps it's been ruled out, or they quoted someone talking about a struggle afterwards by mistake.

I agree with the second part but I'd prefer to wait for more facts to emerge before reaching any conclusions.

The attacker seems to have focused on her quite a bit if she'd merely intervened - two shots put her down, then he leant over and shot her in the face while she was on the ground. THEN stabbed her and accounts of him kicking her as well. OK, she might have just set him off into a blind rage (or he was already in one) but you'd think if he was struggling with someone previously he might have resumed attacking them once she was down.

In what will comes as a surprise to exactly no-one, Mair has been described as "a loner with a history of mental health problems" but locals are shocked because he was "polite, quiet and kept to himself".

It's almost like there's a type, here...

I was under the impression that he was arrested at the scene. It seems instead he was picked up nearby and there are no reports of any weapons being found on him - very few details of the arrest at all in fact other than he was apparently injured in some manner. That being the case, I agree with your sentiment.

Britain needs to reexamine why they let mentally ill people have easy access to firearms and knives.

Did some EU official flip through his Rolodex of suggestible OCD whack jobs to find the right trigger man to take out a popular yet expendable Remain MP, some sweet woman the public could immediately relate to and feel sympathy for? Was the final stabbing and cutting to illustrate how a Brexit would drag the UK down into murder and cannibalism on British streets?

And where was her security team? British soldiers have gotten their heads cut off in the street by crazed jihadists, yet we're to believe an MP is still out in public without a six man security detail? Even Milo Yanopoulis travels with men in dark suits these days, but members of Parliament don't? No, someone made sure her security team was elsewhere at the crucial moment.

And just ask yourself "who benefits"? Remain MPs? EU bureaucrats? German industrialists? French financiers? Russian oligarchs? Sarah Palin? Romulans?

It has all the hallmarks of an assassination by forces unknown, linked by a web of pushpins and newspaper clippings.

Many countries don't have the same level of armed security around members of the government as in the US. The last non-IRA assasination of a British MP was in the 19th century if i recall correctly.
