For the record this is opt out, meaning if you contact your ISP and say you want the ban lifted they will do it. The outrage seems to be based on a misunderstanding of this. It's main purpose is to try and reduce access to kiddie porn, etc.

So you have to call up your ISP and say "Please, put me on the list that wants PORN, PORN, PORN in my house!"

Yeah, you're right. Total misunderstanding. Nothing wrong with that.

How about opt-in? You want neutered internet you call up and ask for it?

So you don't think there is a difference between an opt out and a compulsory ban?

Personally I would have no problem making that call. Hell, back in the day before the internet you'd have to go and buy your porn mags from the top shelf in the newsagents and stand in a queue with them. Felt more rewarding afterwards.

All to easy now for internet cowards who think that if they do it hidden away nobody will judge them.

Well, making it harder for Brits to view porn of any kind will certainly shut down the slime who produce kiddie porn. In a "not at all" sort of way.

This is only an inroad. If your government gets to tell ISPs how to set customers' accounts up, it's not going to be the last thing your government tells ISPs to do with customers' accounts. This is 'the thing they got away with doing' that they'll later use as precedent for doing even more intrusive shit.

So you don't have a problem walking around with your head up your ass?

Personally I'd find quite uncomfortable, but then again I inherited a rather stiff back.

Now how bout you go reread my post and actually respond to what I wrote?

God, you can be a pompous little turd can't you? :jayzus:

If the purpose of this law is to reduce access then an opt-in further reduces the scope of the block and essentially renders the move completely ineffective since it's highly unlikely that people would read the small print every time they join an ISP and say "hey, can you block my porn please"? In other words, no different from the child blocking software that already exist.

In contrast, with an opt-out it is likely that many people signing up to an ISP would not check the small print and the block would remain in place. One of the reasons for proposal is to combat bad parents who just buy a computer for their sprog and let it go roaming unprotected around the internet unchecked. That is unless you think kids viewing double penetrations on youporn at 8 years old is a good thing?

So often tragedies spawn bad ideas. Safe to say we're all against children being murdered and child pornography, which is why those things are already illegal. Making customers opt-in to the "adult internet" doesn't address either problem. I get the good intentions yet this isn't helping.

Given the choice I'd have to side with an opt-out option.

Yes he can be a pompous little turd, but for once, he's right. Your government shouldn't be in the business of filtering your internet.

I dunno... the one thing that makes sense is that once upon a time, you had to get your porn at the magazine stand, smut shop, or delivered in plain brown paper that fooled nobody. Of course, there were movies, but again they had to be purchased in some format from someplace.

Now, of course, there's so much free access porn online that I'm surprised there's an industry left. It must be the UGO links that make them money?

That was clear from the article, and it's definitely outrage worthy. It means that to view legal content, you and Dan will need to register to receive the content, placing yourself on the porn list. So what should be a private activity becomes public. The goal is to legally shame people, effectively inhibiting them from freedom of action.

And don't for a minute believe that being on that list won't be seen as membership in a pervert's and pedaphile's club.

How in the hell is this not drawing more opposition?

In Ireland, there are proposals to ban escort/prostitution websites, and to put the people who use them on the same list as the kiddie porn viewers.

First steps on a slippery slope.

If I have to choose between 8 year old kids watching porn, and a massive curbstomp of civil liberties, guess which I'm going to choose. This proposed legislation isn't just about filtering porn.

    [Source]

This is how it happens, some politician says "but we must protect the children," and uses it to take civil liberties to the shack out back and put it down like Old Yeller.

I was thinking, and a small fire erupted between my ears, so I decided to respond.

What list does your name go on for opting in, and wanting to bypass something that was created as a measure to halt the dissemination of child porn?
