I want to push back on this a little bit, not because I think kids can't have a sense of gender identity from a very young age -- they certainly can -- but because I think preferences in clothes and toys really aren't a good indicator.
Some children identify with past lives at a very young age as well and nobody takes them serious. I'm extremely offended.
I doubt that. The concept that boys and girls exist and are different is something kids are exposed to from a very young age; the concept of past lives, not so much. See also @Nova's post about how anything without a biological basis really can't be a legitimate analogy here.
This just in - CNN weighs in with some SCIENCE! No way to determine gender in a newborn child? 99.999 percent of the time, but still...... Wow, the shift from "just asking questions" to "openly trolling transgender people because that's what's trendy among conservatives" was so subtle that everyone noticed.
No, not in and of itself. But it may show up like that. Whatever it is, it will be consistent throughout childhood. It’s not anything specific and will vary from child to child. These preferences will be present in cis-gender children as well. It’s not foolproof. It’s just an indicator. The best thing is just to let the child be and respect their preferences. Don’t try to push boy stuff on boy children who show a preference for girl things and vice versa. Don’t push girl things on girl children who show a preference for boy things.
Not that the two things are in any way related, I often said thing when I was very young like “when I was an adult...” no one ever ridiculed me. Not that they took me seriously either. But identifying with a past life doesn’t require others to accept you as the opposite gender. Failed argument is a failure.
But trolling everyone else is perfectly fine by you. Nova crushed any debate when she came in here and told us to STFU.
Nova would no doubt be much happier today if she'd had the opportunity to take puberty blockers as a child and not been subjected to years of religious brainwashing and suppression, so it's not surprising that she'd have strong feelings on the subject. Not sure what anyone else's excuse is (Tererun excepted). Thanks for the past-lives article, though. It's an interesting read, although I don't think it really does much to further the idea that children can't possibly know their gender identities.
My thought is if you are not imposing gender norms on your children this may not come up until society comes into play. A child who is being forced into a certain gender will have to object to being put into that gender role. However, if you are letting your boy play pricess and wear dresses as per their desire the idea might not present itself until later, especially in a much more trans friendly supporting environment. This is just my opinion and I am not a trans man or cis woman. I think some of the reason that things differ for trans men over trans women is that cis girls are allowed more often to be tomboyish and push gender bounderies while cis males and trans females are ridiculed for playing with girls things, or being feminine. There are other reasons why things are different, of course, but it may push a need to identify one's gender down the road a bit if you are in an area where you can explore yourself in the opposite gender. Again, this is just an idea I have had from talking to trans men.
I guess I will go somewhat into this. First off, gender nonconformity is not gender dysphoria. This goes down the same lines that a drag queen is not necessarily transgendered. A person who does not conform with gender norms may dislike being forced to conform to societal gender norms, but they may be happy in their body as it is. This is a different thing from trans people. This sort of thing as a scientific paper just immediate lost me when they talk about past life memories. As far as I know past life memories are not an established fact. I am not saying these thoughts do not exist, but rather they cannot prove they are from past lives and not the creation of the mind. Since the mind does try to rationalize things within the context that it has learned, these may actually be caused by a child wanting a reason to justify why they are not gender conformative. Since gender conflicts can cause huge amounts of stress and trauma in kids there is a huge possibility the subconscious creates these memories to protect itself. One of the things they found with the attempts of a person to adress vague ideas of past trauma is that they invent past trauma to be victimized by. This came out with dianetics auditing when people would subconsciously invent momories to correspond to pressure to recognize past trauma because the e-meter indicated there was something there. If you are badgering a kid enough about why they do not conform to their gender, their mind may pick up on things like belief in past lives and just generate a memory for that. I am not reading that crazy shit all the way through. They first have to prove past life memories are past life memories in order to make the claim that they have something to do with causing people to not conform to their present gender. Gender dysphoria has an actual existence and it is not based in fantasy. We actually have genders, even though we probably do not have memories of past lives.
Some of us might have liked that. My mom never even thought of getting me my own dresses so I had to steal them from my sister and mom. I try not to bring that shit up with her, but really? You knew I wanted to do this, and you knew shit was a problem with stealing clothing, so your solution was to pay a shrink rather than just buy me some cute clothes?
Well, the good thing is, if you are unsure about things, you still have a couple of years to decide to take the blockers.
I went down a internet rabbit hole last night after following @Nova’s link she gave me about childhood transitions. Some people take xenogenderism very seriously: https://lgbta.wikia.org/wiki/Xenogender Although it seems like a step away from becoming Pokemon to me, I can understand that for some people - especially those with sensory heavy ASD - a gender based on how they feel things might make sense to them than masculine/feminine.
OMG, you had to do work so you don't interfere with someone else's business? Imagine having to live with this shit. All you had to do was research. That made you feel bad. Do you know how trans people have tortured themselves over the years because of society bashing them? I am so sorry you went through so much trouble learning about other people. When you really could have started out from the point of you have your fun because it doesn't effect me in any meaningful or harmful way. You nasty trans people should feel like shit because karen's feelings were hurt when she stepped on you. She did not want to feel like a bad person when she came around trying to get up into your medical relationship with your doctor. Because she should be inspecting everyone's medications and the goverment should be all over those procedures. Does it hurt that you were an ignorant scumbag? Do you want a prize or something little miss victim? Let me see if I can squeeze a fucking tear out. I just want to take a moment to thank you. Because I might have blamed people different than me for their anger with dumbass prejudice. I don't know how black people don't just smack the racist shit out of some person's mouth. next time I see an angry black woman I am going to give her a smile and a fucking gift. I cannot even imagine what growing up with racism does to you, but I know it is wrong as Trump.
