Well, now the anti-vax fucktards have really done it.

Feds crack down on trucker protest financing, from crowdfund rules to freezing bank accounts

Crowdfunding sites will be required to register with Canada's federal financial intelligence unit, FINTRAC, and will be subject to the same anti-money laundering reporting and compliance requirements as financial institutions.

I can't imagine FinCEN (the U.S. financial intelligence agency) and similar agencies from G7 countries will be far behind.

Does this mean more KYC (know your customer) information being required of donors? That's a bunch of interesting data to the right people...

I like how the article mentions they will be targeting commercial accounts some workers may be using to fund this. I am sure the logistics companies will be quick to figure out who is abusing their system before they get their entire fuel spending account frozen. That is going to cause some terminations.

I do not know what these idiots were expecting. They are acting like terrorists in disrupting the lives of foreign people, and now they are going to find out.

it's no secret that Canadian banks have long been a soft target for international money launderers.

also, to nobody's surprise, some of the money behind far righties here comes from property developers (see Matamy Homes relation to XXXProud groups, et al). Not like the construction industry isn't a good place to get your shirts cleaned either...

Honestly I don't see why the Emergencies Act is necessary, we're able to sort things out pretty quickly when people are protesting logging or pipelines

These protests or whatever we're calling it have been peaceful. Full of idiots, yes, but peaceful idiots nonetheless

Of course there's some greasy far right bullshit at play here, but how about focusing on that small portion of it instead of painting a whole slew of regular people with the same brush

Trudeau has been a complete disaster throughout this entire ordeal, he's just embarrassing at this point

Yeah I read it, thought it was quite good - as per the author the majority of people were peaceful, misguided for sure but peaceful

The encampment away from the protest was the obvious problem and sounded like a far right staging ground or something. Which brings me to my point - why do we need sweeping Emergency Act powers to deal with a tiny band of cunts like that?

What do you think the benefits of Trudeau going full Emergency Act are?

Yes - in the article it made it sound like he wasn't getting the support he wanted from the Feds or the Province, so I'm not surprised he resigned

Trudeau vanishes with covid and Ford was nowhere to be found when this all started happening. If they had been remotely competent they could have nipped this in the bud. Instead they let it fester to the point they now have to overreact and invoke the Emergency Act. This whole thing is just beyond ludicrous, from the spoiled idiots protesting, to the fucking American funding, to the terrible leadership from our shitty leaders

It just boggles my mind that you'd go so far as to lose your house, the roof over your fucking head, because you won't get a shot that a billion other people have and are fine. Beyond idiotic

    From the article:

“Most of the people I spoke to were surprised at the resistance. I think the convoy is under the false impression that they have unwavering popular support. It helps them to see opposition.”

The fucking idiots in the convoy have been drinking their own piss for two years.

They need to understand that somewhere between 80 to 90% of Canadians think they're batshit crazy.

Also... under Canada's new emergency measures, a lot of these "freedom convoy" idiots are going to wake up tomorrow and find out that their car loans, mortgages and savings accounts have been cancelled or closed down.

Much like the January 6th insurrectionists, social media thankfully makes it easy for the banks to identify these wackos.

Fuck around and find out, indeed.

Not a good idea IMO and will backfire tremendously

Cancelling someone's mortgage because they attended a misguided but mostly peaceful protest is not a good look by any means

I don't think the gov't is stupid enough to do that, so I don't see it becoming a problem. Hope I'm right!

Under the emergency order, it's an offence for any financial institution to do business with any of these fucktards. The banks basically have to close the accounts in order to comply (in addition to filing reports with FINTRAC and the RCMP).

And if anyone thinks this measure is authoritarian or draconian, you can thank 9/11.

The U.S. Treasury Department, for example, already has the authority to issue targeting orders that basically require financial institutions to stop doing business with certain individuals or groups.

Most G7 countries have similar provisions in their anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing legislation.
