Common courtesy - simple respect - says you call people what they want to be called even if you do not share their understanding of their identity... but a lot of folks much prefer to be assholes over something that is, in the course of their day, a very small, petty, inconsequential choice.
McCarthyism was a reason to discriminate against people you did not like in the local scene. It is still being used on people like Amaris and Bernie. OMG they are communists/socialists. Both of them disagree with the fascism of communist Russia. Really, McCarthy was anti-russian and just demonized communism. It was just another reason to use xenophobia to remove people who you do not like by demonizing them. It is the fascist right wing way.

They never had any ACTUAL interest in free speech or the marketplace of ideas or people being "canceled" - only that the ideas THEY support were getting pushed back on and they needed a propaganda term to demonize the "other side" That's what I mean when I say cancel culture **AS THEY USE THE TERM** doesn't exist. That's not to say that no one ever had a speech canceled or got unjustly fired.
I am a little bit mixed on deplatforming still. Certain platforms are monetized and have huge audiences available to them. You just cannot create another youtube, FB, twitter, or any other platform that has taken off to include that many people. The right recognizes the damage they can do to thought when it is removed and placed into the fringe. This is because they do it with brown people, GLBT people, progressives, non-christians, and tons of others. They made this mess because they never wanted to actually protect free speech and the ability to speak to millions. Now their prejudicial viewpoints are getting cut down. Yes, it is censorship, but it has been going around for years. No one said TV had to allow gay characters on general programming for everyone. It is still considered an adult topic they are trying to put back in the bottle of being forbidden in G and PG rated stuff. They are still trying to censor it from the children's view in schools while pushing christian values and marriage. FB cracked down on trans people using the names they wanted because right wing people reported them for not using their real name. They actually deadnamed people for the right wing. One of my friends had to keep a name she hated because she had made the mistake of fighting with the right and they reported any attempt she made to make a new account. She died under the name her hateful parents forced upon her. FB would not even hear of a name change for her after she was deceased. As far as I am concerned fuck the right wing assholes and their whining. They are just mad because now people can use the same tactics on them to a lesser degree.
Exactly. Plus, there's a distinct difference between an unpopular opinion in the abstract and an unpopular opinion that is unpopular specifically because it harms people. Saying, for example, that the Civil War wasn't fought over slavery might get you "canceled" (to use the term) but it is ultimately a pretty abstract debate - saying trans people are a direct threat to your women and children and must be legislated out of public life has a direct, severe, negative consequence in direct relationship to the prominence of the one expressing the opinion - as any trans woman in the UK can tell you right now. The negative consequences for the latter by all rights SHOULD be more severe and costly than the former because the consequences of the speech are. I can assure any of the hand wringers that the sum total of all the "abuse" directed at JKR so far and for the rest of her privileged life because of her TERFy ideas wouldn't hold a candle to the shit trans women in the UK deal with weekly because of those ideas. Don't WANT abuse? Don't be abusive. Whether or not people SHOULD return your venom in kind, the best way to avoid it is to not deserve it.

I'm forced to disagree. I know a gay guy that likes to wear high heels and dresses in drag from time to time. He put his favorite wig on me a few months ago. We're not best friends, but we get along, we drink together. This pandemic has made some strange bedfellows to say the least. I saw him last night, said hello, gave him a hug, he showed me his new heels and we went on to our separate groups. I leave him alone when it comes to how he dresses and things like that. It costs me nothing and avoids any potential confrontation. Do I think it's kind of weird, yeah, so what? How hard is it to say, okay you're a Vulcan and yet still think in your mind, "what a weirdo" and go on your way?
