Capitol Hill buildings evacuated as police negotiate with man claiming to have bomb

Multiple buildings on Capitol Hill were evacuated Thursday as Capitol Police negotiated with a man claiming to have a bomb in a pickup truck outside the Library of Congress.

U.S. Capitol Police urged people to avoid the area while they conducted what was described as "an active bomb investigation."

Negotiators were communicating with the man in hopes of having a "peaceful resolution to this incident," Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger told reporters around midday.

Snipers could be seen positioned around the Capitol as police continued to negotiate with the suspect, who was not publicly identified.

The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and District of Columbia's Metropolitan Police were assisting Capitol Police in its response.

A photo posted to social media showed a white man in a muddy pickup truck stopped on the sidewalk outside the Jefferson Building with what appeared to be dollar bills scattered on the street.

In a video streamed live on Facebook, the man threatened to blow up "two-and-a-half city blocks" if police tried to shoot him. He claimed to have ammonium nitrate in a toolbox.

“The revolution is on," he said. "I’m ready to die for the cause.”

According to a law enforcement update obtained by Yahoo News, the man was communicating with police negotiators using a white board. Among other things, he stated that he did not have any weapons and wanted to talk to “a preacher.”

I assume he’s only still alive because he’s white.

Can't wait for FOX to claim he was just a patriot exercising his constitutional rights, carrying around that bomb for self-defense while peacefully walking around a public building paid for with his tax dollars.

I'd have guessed it was Federal Farmer if he didn't look 50 years too old.

Evidently he also had recently lost his mother.

He initially started telling random passerbys he had a bomb. They ignored him and walked on.

He then called in a 911 threat himself, claiming to have a bomb in his truck that would go off if he was shot and 4 others around the city. He did have a device but it was non-functional. No other bombs were found.

Someone in his family had called in to NC police that he was threatening to do violence in DC or Virginia.

Oh, and his placement of his truck meant the Library of Congress had to be evacuated - as well as the Republican National Committee HQ.
