Ya know, i think if this was for sale it would sell not a few copies... [yt=Carlin Rap]a3asbkY0tTE&feature=player_embedded[/yt]
I actually saw that show live (not the one filmed by HBO, but the same tour) and when he went through that introduction he fucked it up about halfway through. He yelled "AW, FUCK!!!" and let a stream of curses that, to this day, are still hanging over the theatre.
Carlin was one of the greatest stand up comics ever. Sharp, witty, and intelligent. With him, the dirty words enhanced the routine and made you think. With today's generation of comedians, the dirty words ARE the routine.
Carlin feckin rules! An evening watching him and Bill Hicks makes me think there actually are some smart, funny people in America
Earlier Carlin is better than later Carlin IMHO. Towards the end George was a lot less funny and a lot more bitter.
I'd forgotten how funny Carlin is when he's funny. My favorite current comedian is Louis CK. Like I said, they had him on Comedy Central one night, unbleeped, and I was laughing so hard it was actually painful. Laying on the bed in the hotel room, unable to breathe funny. If it wasn't for commercials I'd have had to shut the TV off.
Of course I like Bill and George. Mitch was a little more "my generation" than Carlin, and his absurd, non sequitur delivery was gold, Jerry. Gold.
I was never a huge fan of Mitch. I went to a comedy show several weeks ago and it was for amateurs. 90% of the comics were very obviously huge Hedberg fans because all of their jokes were one liners and a very poor attempt at his style. IMO, I think Mitch Hedberg is overrated and was overpopular. His jokes were decent but he wasn't near as good as I feel everyone builds him up to be. I have to say Bill Hicks is my favorite above all. Carlin, of course, is classic, but I didn't like his later stuff as much as his older stuff. Like Lanzman said, Carlin gets super bitter in his later stuff. I feel like that's what he started to rely on as he got older. But he's still awesome all the same. I love Bill cause he has a different way of looking at things and he makes valid points about everything he discusses. He turns bitter shit into something to laugh about. I also recently actually watched Bill Cosby's comedy. I hadn't really seen any of his, but I think he's great too. Also, Bill Bailey and Billy Connolly are other favorites of mine.
Eh, like I said before I never got that sense. It was just true to me. Agree on Hicks and Hedberg though.
Carlin was true to himself. That's what I respect. He was never afraid to tell his audience about shit we don't care about and he made it entertaining. And shit we do care about, he wasn't afraid wasn't worth shit. That's what's so good, IMO.
I saw Carlin live at the Vegas MGM Grand in '99 and he was funny as hell. One guy learned the hard way not to heckle George Carlin. He got a little too cynical/political for my tastes near the end, but he was always fun to watch.
