baba the first thing you do is roll up your stats: Strength 3d6 Constitution 3d6 Dexterity 3d4 Charisma 3d3 Wisdom 3d2 Intelligence d1
Not sure if our (board) has the right sort of irc that can roll dices, trekbbs had one that could do it.
Not a problem if said DM rolls the dice. I think, in certain situations, having hidden dice rolls would be superior.
The thing I'm talking about allows a character to just hit the 'd6' button, or 'd8', for the appropriate weapon. Saves the DM some effort, and makes initiative go faster.
I'll see about finding it again when I get home. As I recall, it took about 10 minutes for me to download and install, and was fairly intuitive.
I might be interested in an onlne D&D game with you guys, but we might want to wait for 4th ED, and there is still no sub for sitting around your table with your bunds, dice, pen and paper, books, etc.
Eh, everything I'm hearing about 4E is just awful. Hell, they took out gnomes so they could make tieflings "core".
Eh, it can last a while, but an ongoing campaign that character isn't going to be viable with the other players. The question is whether the GM is going to allow interparty conflict or not. In some cases it can make for extremely interesting and fun stories, though it generally takes a more mature group. And in the case of the vast majority of the players playing good characters, it is ultimately going to end up poorly for the CE character. It really depends on what the players want in their game. If it's a mission oriented game, or your typical dungeon crawl, a CE character is a huge liability. The best that can be hoped for is they eventually ostracize the character. But then, alignments in D&D are a huge copout anyway - it's shorthand for playing an interesting, deep character. If I was the GM I'd want to know why the Bard in question would characterize themselves as CE. If that makes sense within the context of the story he is planning on telling, that would be fine. But the shorthand version of CE is the very worst type of person to be around in most D&D settings. Their personal choices are extraordinarily selfish without considering the other characters, and intentionally willful and disruptive when it comes to law. D&D is a particularly social game within the context of the 'party.' The easiest choice for the other players to make in this context, especially if they are tied to the character by family or other bonds, is to simply shun them. This eventually occurs even to the manipulative and charismatic style CE character. Which isn't a lot of fun for the person playing that character. A high-powered game is actually the easiest to play that type of character, as odds are they will have to be self-reliant. They may have toady NPCs, but in a good group they aren't likely to have any long term friendships with the other PCs. That, or a short game, where the repercussions of their actions don't necessarily have time to catch up with them.
As far as online games go, they can be a lot of fun. Dice aren't an issue, there are all sorts of dice servers out there - one I played on actually emailed the player and the GM all the dice rolls. Here's Irony, one of the better ones: http://www.irony.com/mailroll.html Or the GM can generate a list of dice rolls, and simply check off the next one in line when it comes to that dice. You can do that here: http://www.costik.com/frpdice.html And IM and chat versions of online gaming is pretty similar to normal tabletop gaming, the GM just has to make sure all the players are comfortable with it and organize it so that all the players are equally involved. That way it isn't just the fastest typer gets to take the most actions. But there's all sorts of great online resources to help run games now.
If I were to help run an online D&D game (honestly I think I'm the best-suited to be a DM here) it would be 3.5E, because that's what all my books are for. If people are interested, I'll start looking into the software and story bits.
My first campaign is ending, so next Friday I'll say goodbye to my Dwarf Druid. Now, for the new campaign, I'll be a Human Psion (keneticist). int 18, str 8, con 16 Neutral-good, lonely past filled with abuse, relatively young. My roommate decided to ditch the CE character and play a CG barbarian, str 18, int 9, cha 8 Fucking ugly bodybuilder barbarian!
The Obama '08 avatar made me think garamet had just outed herself as a warmage, in capital letters no less. Strange.
