Possibly. Alternatively they could simply be improving their labour laws like dozens of other developed nations do without international comment?
Economic growth has slowed, so perhaps they want to focus on dividing the pie better. Population growth has slowed, so they want working-age people to have more time for childcare. There have also been a bunch of reforms to the education sector this month, designed to take the pressure of kids and families vis a vis testing and cram culture. They also like sticking it to big businesses who have grown too powerful and arrogant in the eyes of the Party. See: Jack Ma and Ant Financial.
China bans "effeminate" men from TV (NPR) Broadcasters must "resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics," the TV regulator said, using an insulting slang term for effeminate men — niang pao, or literally, "girlie guns." Republicans et al. are always comparing Democrats to Communists unfavorably, but I think they'd rather appreciate this social regressivism.
I really would not say men wearing feminine clothing are sissies considering what they face for doing so. What I would say are sissy boys are those men who have melt downs in fear of masks, vaccines, dems, libs, small cars, powerful women, gays, and effeminate men being more popular than they are.
The government of Harbin, a Northeast city, euthanized some cats for testing positive for SARS-CoV-2, without their owner's consent. https://supchina.com/2021/09/28/harbin-officials-face-backlash-for-putting-down-covid-positive-cats/ Is this the moment when John Wick ends the CCP?
Been hearing a lot about this recently (Evergrande and developer pyramid schemes in general crashing). China’s economy crashing would… not be good.
On top of China's not-too-distant demographic problem, this is bad news for them. For the world, really, given how intertwined all our economies are these days.
China may indeed have hidden economic problems, but I don't know that that's related to a push to not waste food.
The problems with that one company? No. The implied weakness of the economy due to speculation, bubbles, pyramid scheming, etc? This is less obvious.
That may depend on where you're getting your news. This has been headline news on multiple radio stations I listen to. One of which is NPR. None are Fox, AON or ... anything remotely partisan either way.
My first thought about the "don't waste food" thing was that it was ideological and ethical. China has been cracking down on rich people who flaunt their wealth and ignore Communist values. Even the urban middle class has a bad habit of going to restaurants and ordering numerous plates of food that they won't actually eat, just for the sake of variety and conspicuous consumption. I've gotten into rows with dates over this. But then, I started seeing these notices these week. Government is urging families to stock up on food and emergency supplies. It could be just general precautions for the winter wrapped in clumsy messaging. It could be related to the latest covid outbreak that is still spreading. Or they could be indicating they see some kind of disaster on the horizon. Now I worry.
Tennis player Peng Shuai has accused an official in the Chinese Communist Party of sexual assault. She hasn't been seen or heard from since. A state sponsored media outlet released what they claimed to be an email from Peng Shuai indicating that she is safe and that the allegations that she accused anyone of sexual assault are untrue. It is widely believed that this email is a fake. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-59325399 https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_...ase-attributed-peng-shuai-raises-wta-concerns https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/11/missing-tennis-star-peng-shuai-sends-suspicious-email.html
Last I heard, the Chinese government is saying it was a routine statement that they make before every winter that's been misinterpreted. YMMV.
All the gossip on the ground here is that war with Taiwan is imminent. Doesn't make it likely, but that's what's on people's minds.
China moves against Taiwan coordinated with a Russian move against Ukraine. The West is divided, weak, wrapped up in CoVID, and obsessed with pronouns. "There will never be a better time."
Woman's Tennis Association suspends all tournaments in China over the Peng Shuai thing (BBC) I don't know if there's been another thread on this. Peng Shuai is a Chinese tennis player who got disappeared last month after she publicly accused one of the top government leaders of rape. The WTA stands to lose a lot of funding by antagonizing China. Good on them.
If China wants to be regarded as an upstanding member of the international community, its officials will do what respectable leaders of respectable Western countries do about problematic citizens, and send anonymous agents to hustle them off the streets into unmarked vans in broad daylight.
I doubt their various government-sponsored hackers will be forced to obey this edict. I did get a chuckle out of one such group being identified as Chinese because their attacks always dropped off during Chinese national holidays. What, you couldn't set a timer on your run_NSA_hack.exe job?
Turns out the West was neither weak nor divided and that the only folks obsessed with pronouns are the far right. Most everyone has just shrugged and moved on.
In fairness, Russia didn't hold up their end. It is only through the complete ineptness of the Russians that a Western unity has emerged. Had they seized Kiev by day 3 (as most everyone expected), the West would've clucked about it but accepted it as a fait accompli. But Ukraine's ability to hold out--and dominate the public relations war--gave the West time to strengthen their resolve.
