I'm currently fighting a land war in Asia. And winning. So, who here plays? Up for a game, by email or live?
Civ V is out in a few days - I didn't like Civ V as much as some of its predecessors, but I'm going to pick up the new one and give it a shot. I *think* it is more geared to MP than Civ IV was, based on the reviews I've seen.
What do you mean "MP"? I also didn't like CIV IV as much as the earlier ones, but I thought I was just sick of the game. Maybe I'll look at Civ V.
I played IV. Bored the ever-loving fuck out of me with its tediousness, and then pissed me right the hell off with the way you can make a tiny mistake or two early on that you cannot correct late in the game.
Yea, I didn't like that either - so maybe it wasn't Civ, just that incarnation of it. And, what the heck was the deal with the religion thing?
Religion was just one of the things I didn't much care about; it did add an interesting twist at first, but all the religions were effectively the same and only marginally changed gameplay. It should either have been removed entirely or treated more realistically. Some of the great leader stuff was equally annoying. But, I've gotten all of them, so I know I'm going to get Civ V too. I just think Civ II was the highlight of the franchise (because spearmen just shouldn't be able to defeat tanks like Civ I). Civ V looks to have a pretty slick interface and we're finally past the square tiles - I really wonder how that is going to change tactics.
I liked the third one because I liked having borders, but I didn't like the that the father away from the capital your cities were, your corruption was at like 90 percent or some outrageous thing.
Yeah -- it should be the other way around! I haven't played I or II too much; I really got into the series with Civ III, though conducting wars in three was a royal pain in the ass because of lack of stack damage and losing tanks to fucking warriors. IV nerfed some of the strategic resources while greatly expanding the luxury resources. It's really annoying to be able to build gunpowder units without a gunpowder resource (saltpeter in III). For example, when I'm at the point where I'm building cossacks (I play as Russia under Catherine a lot, hur hur), it's viable to pillage enemy strategic resources to fuck their production lines and only deal with the units already built. But once they AI starts building cavalry, aside from horses and iron, there really isn't a resource to pillage to keep them from building riflemen, and later, infantry. But, at that point, I'm sending waves of modern armory and mech. infantry, with stealth bombers to soften the enemy. V looks to eliminate stacks completely, and has removed religion from the game. Personally, I found religion to be a good money-maker.
Is Call to Power similar to Civ? I really got into Ages of Empires(?) for a while, but once you get up into the higher levels, it seems to be more about military than building a civilization or empire.
Ever played masters of orion or wing commander jenee? WIng commander is the bsg of space flight sims.
never got into the flying or space flight sims - there was one motorcycle arcade game I used to play that I liked, tho.
Malcom McDowell plays admiral tolwyn in wing commander 3 and mark hamill plays Colonel Christopher Blair. Blair is a gaming hero badass in the retro days of gaming.
I sorta enjoyed Galactic Civilizations. When push came to shove, it was Civ, set in outer space--a complete ripoff--but I enjoyed it. A few years back GalCiv II came out, but I only picked up the demo. If I can still find it, I may buy it. It had some cool stuff, like new aliens and you could design custom ships.
I did like Balder's Gate, Baba - but preferred Diablo. Volpone, was Galactic Civ anything like Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri?
They are Civ. Kinda. The gameplay is pretty much exactly the same. In fact, the first game was called Civilization: Call to Power. The developers lost the license to use the Civ name with the sequel, so it was just called Call to Power II. I liked Age of Empires II as well, but I really don't see them as filling the same gaming niche.
I should be picking up Civ V tonight, I'll let you guys know what I think in a few days if I don't die of hunger, thirst, or "one-more-turn" syndrome first.
paradox can suck my cock. not to be mean, but I've had bad experiences with them. I'll still buy some of their good games, but they still have to suck my cock from time to time.
