AIUI, the full panel array isn't exposed, so the juice they'll be getting from the sun won't be enough to do anything with, other than preventing the lander from being completely dead. Its possible that as it gets closer, and parts of the comet burn off, it might see an increase in sunlight, before too much of the comet start gassing that it could come back to life long enough to do science. Right now, though, its dead. They were supposed to hear from it a couple of hours ago, and there was no signal. It'll be weeks before we'll have a chance to hear from it again, if the lander's getting enough sunlight to trickle charge the batteries.
The mission was a success, in that they actually landed a fucking probe on a fucking comet that's over thirty fucking million miles away. Go science!
It will certainly make it easier for us to do it again, no matter if the lander revives or not. I'm real interested to see what kind of info they've gathered about the composition. If there's a hydrogen rich mixture of gases on the comet, then the next lander will probably be equipped to use that in addition to solar panels, effectively mining a comet! One of my friends on Facebook was bitching about Rosetta, and mockingly saying that it was going to provide America with all kinds of jobs. A few other people had agreed with him, so I simply pointed out that the US had nothing to do with the mission. Surprisingly, nobody responded to his post after that.
Well, it's sleeping, not dead. Give it sunlight and it will come back. The good news is: ten experiments were conducted by the probe and the data was sent back. They are saying it's enough data to take years to analyze. Also, loads of supposedly awesome photos incoming. Here's the photo of the year: http://www.esa.int/spaceinimages/Images/2014/11/OSIRIS_spots_Philae_drifting_across_the_comet
Yay! Welcome back! The space agencies are sure having fun on Twitter. Curiousity congratulated Philae. Whoever said 'hey, let's have the probes tweet!' in some boring NASA meeting should really get some social media award.
