The Capitol Committee is meeting in Nashville to discuss removing the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest. It doesn't seem to be going well for the pro-busters.

The simple answer is yes, but there is more context to it. The South also didn't want to lose control in Congress and the writing was on the wall by the 1850s that there was going a Republican president which precisely why SC. seceded when Lincoln won the election. They fought a war because they lost an election. After the Missouri Compromise, remaining in the union was conditional and by 1850, slavery was so ingrained as an economic system that gradual emancipation would be unacceptable. That being said, prior to the civil war southern state constitutions did not protect slavery.

I have a problem with the use of the word myth in regard to what is going on. Myth takes some of the blame away from the why. It is an outright lie and deception by the white supremacists.

I do not want to play the game of whitewashing because it makes racists sad to hear the truth that they are racist and horrible people. The idea that heritage and southern pride does not include racism in the south is a bold faced lie. Pretending it is a myth gives too much legitimacy to the lie. When you look into a society which has believed in the myth of jesus you might see where they might want to believe in the myths created about the flag of traitors and racists. Lots of people believe in myths by mistake or even by some design to enhance their lives. However this needs to be addressed as a lie because it was told with the purpose of obfuscating the truth.

The truth is that the confederate flag and the heritage it is about is slavery and murder of the US citizens. It was about stealing US land for the purposes of slavery, and the killing of anyone who opposed it. Later it was about putting signs that heritage and theology was still out there to terrorize the slaves. It is not a myth, it is a lie for the purpose of terrorizing and promoting violence and every asswipe who makes an excuse for it at this point is just trying to cover up their racism.

    But SHERPL's heritage!
It's a long article, the rest of it's at the link, and it's not really clear what will happen next. The Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) will vote on the matter in October. They have to hold two votes on it, and a 2/3rds majority is required to remove the busts. Assuming that they do vote to remove them, I don't know of any reason why the members of the General Assembly couldn't override that vote. Just have to see.

Considering all I know about Leopold I came from the BBC show Victoria staring Jenna Coleman, maybe I should have dug a little deeper before naming my Belgian Malinois.

However, I don't care if anyone cares that I named my German Shepherd after the Iron Chancellor himself. :ramen:

He is the executive editor but has no idea how this happened. I know how it happened. Some racist editor let it happen. We know what an editor for a newspaper does, so it was their job to make sure these things don't happen. That is if the newspaper actually gives a fuck. We know who is responsible for the content that makes it in. As the executive editor he holds some responsibility for his staff and what they edit. There are plenty of people looking for work who can read and keep these things out of print.

An apology is nice, but every one of the editing staff responsible for these articles should be fired. Anything else is just an excuse for why they published something so harmful and full of shit.

^ Which still might not prevent him from vetoing it. That way, they have to override the veto, and he can honestly say that he was opposed to it. Since all he knows how to do is play to his base, I can very easily see him doing that.

Yes. Though I can also see the Lincoln Project immediately telling him that this means he has suffered a defeat, at which point he will be psychologically unable not to respond... somehow.
