Most animation is over acted because the initial form is over animated to convey emotion and thoughts. So if you base your acting on the animation you are going to go campy. This is why adapting animation to live action is hard.

I am really hoping whoever did the ad played around with the dynamic a bit. I did watch it a couple of times, and maybe it is just an ad person doing an ad thing. The moves look pretty cool. The style is manga looking which will be a disaster for non-animation fans, but I think cool. Jet sounds like Jet, Spike sounds like spike, and fay would never say that shit. There are some off parts to it, but it looks like they made up the ad in it's own space so the show might be different.

I have to remind myself ad people are not the best people to represent the show. That shit did scare me. I won't lie, if it is written like that I am going to hate it. There is a good possibility, having seen anime adaptations, that it is written like that.

Eh, it seems to me that they were going for a late 60s/early 70s vibe on steroids.

If I look at it as an anime like live action preview in anime style then it would actually be on the money. It would be something like how they do the next episode thing on bebop itself. My initial thought was terror, but viewing it in that light they would have nailed it and that would be a good sign.

I am still just so traumatized by live action adaptations. Of course I will give it a chance, and maybe this will be great. I like the looks of everything. I do see spike in spike. Jet is a ringer. We will see about fay. I liked what the bebop and backgrounds look like.

I am crossing my fingers in hope because if this is a good series they could make some more. Anime has slice of life that I love that would work. We could see series like Kids on a Slope, Usagi Drop, or maybe something like Tora Dora come about. Grave of the Fireflies, or Maybe Akira might come around. I would also think something like Martian Successor Nadesico could come around. They would probably do gundam so I would have to kill them all.

Some series they have tried to live action are just not made for live action. Why adapt a dragonball when it is made to be animated? There are series like Puella Magical Modica which are awesome that I would never watch as live action because the artwork is part of the story. You could do something like Akira, but not something like FLCL where the art is really expressive.

The one thing I love about anime is that some of it is just drama or slice of life sort of stuff. They could make something like Wandering Son into anime really easy. You might even do something like Eccentric Family which might draw a lot of Netflix people in with the drama and interesting city they created. Angel Beats might be an interesting way to bring in young adults. Chobits or Tsubasa might work really well in the sci-fi world. Thinking about it Chobits done from the Manga would have some really big points about body shaming and keeping up with the perfect image.

what do cool people call cowboy bebop? CB? Bop?

Anyway, the anime built scenes around silence. Maybe today's viewers don't have the attention span.

Just shoehorn some gender politics in there. It is Netflix, after all. Then, when it fails miserably, you've got a built-in excuse.

Eh. Netflix is notorious for completely misleading trailers that convey nothing of what a show is about. I'll wait and see.

If it's another Death Note, we'll know soon enough.

I normally do not read the manga so I had to look that one up. I guess you could just leave that one out considering it might attract people to read the manga.

The anime left it at happily ever after with some people wanting another season. I am just at the point where I can leave the manga ending as some sort of demented fanfic that I figured was always out there. Some things you just do not need a conclusion to. I am just glad to know never to watch a season 2.

Snark aside, it feels like this won't be a full on disaster. Worst case scenario, my Kanto YU6s will get a workout from Kanno's new score.

    DenOfGeek REALLY doesn't like it.

Now that Netflix is losing Trek, though, I may have to check it out before deciding whether to cancel my sub.

I've never seen the anime, beyond the clips FB has been pimping to me the last few days.

I liked the anime a lot. I've only seen the first episode of the live action but I also liked it a lot. I think my favorite part was Jet. Perfect casting and acting choices by that actor.

    OK, watched the first episode.

This is not the bebop anime. Things are very similar, but different. This is not a faithful adaptation to the original. That being said it is not bad. I like it. Is it as good as the original, I do not think so. When I realized the characters have different personalities and different backstories I accepted it more as it's own entity. They have thrown some big changes into the characters and even though they can adapt some of the episodes because they are episodic, they do not have to make everything the same.

So the things that really made bebop are still there. They actually seemed to add a bit IMO to the character dynamics. They put in more different music while keeping the old music which is expanding the tracks for it. That is important to a franchise as dedicated to different styles of music as bebop was. The original anime was so entwined with music that it is important this expands on that as music was a character in the anime. It is done well here too.

I do like the CGI artwork for this. The sets are also grungified to match the series. It is dirty and raw like bebop.

The only thing that seemed clunky to me was how they put fay in the bathroom. I did not even know she was captured, and unlike in the original I did not know why they captured her. This happens in the asimov episode and she was not working for the casino. There was an opening scene in the space casino, but fay is a bounty hunter from the start it seems, which is not the original way it was.

So I will see where this goes. Do not go into this expecting them to try and get it like the anime. There are big differences like Jet has an ex-wife and kid.

OK, three episodes in and I would recommend this, but realize the plot and characters have changed. They have adapted this for a netflix audience and not an anime audience. Instead of being episodic with the occasional drop of the series ark, it is a series ark which is cut into episodes. Vicious and the syndicate are in this a lot more like the criminal syndicate is in Ozark. They are bringing in more characters, and Julia is in it instead of being a memory. They are throwing in the bounty characters from the episodes, but they are much more in the background as the character arks are developing.

Jet is the biggest and most awesome surprise in this. Jet is as big of a character as spike and is much more present in this. It is an awesome character too. I actually like the way they gave him a daughter. It gives him a lot more connection and humanity. Jet is so far the heart of the series, which is great. Fay is not in it so much so far. They just brought EIN in with a completely different story. They did the teddy bear bomber with a comjpletely different story. Jet and Spike are playing off each other much more, and it is an improvement.

I do like the new take on the characters so far. Spike does a lot more wisecracking, and Cho really pulls it off IMO. His spike is not the anime spike, but I like his Spike. He carries it well, and he does not camp it up. I see his character and I believe it. This is also a bit more adult. They take the seedy bebop world and make it more adult sexual with some themes that will not be for kids in some parents eyes. There are a number of trans background characters who are put into the glam of the adult world. The third episode hass them going into modern brothels, and there is some fun with S&M people as Spike and Jet try to catch bounties.

The only down side I see so far is vicious. He is like Kylo Ren compared to the old vader. Both Spike and vicious are not the people they were in the anime. In the anime they are huge forces that no one can really stop. Spike could get beaten up, but only vicious could kill him. They were just bound to fight each other and end each other. Here they seem less surreal but more on line with the other characters. Vicious comes off as much more of a weenie rather than Spike's rival. But if they potentially want to have this go on for longer than the anime these changes are important as they up the value of the other characters and arcs.

This is it's own thing with elements of the anime.
