This seems to be the way these conversations go. Someone says "look at this inequality that exists in the present day because of racist systems from the past," and Uncle Albert jumps in with "WELL DON'T EXPECT ME TO PAY FOR IT."

ETA: Importantly, I don't want to argue (and don't think I am arguing) with this guy's life experiences as a Black person. But in navigating stuff like this philosophically, I've got to figure out who the leading voices are and follow those to the best of my ability.

No one is arguing that some black people are assholes and attempt to make others feel guilty about shit they didn’t do. The reason for that is that, and it’s weird that this has to be explained, black people are human too. Humans can be assholes. That doesn’t mean Black History Month is teaching children to feel guilty.

Interesting thing about redlining was how good some banks were at concealing it. They didn’t have maps on the wall with large minority neighborhoods crossed out. They had managers who would train their loan officers with methods to discourage minorities from ever applying for home loans. And if they had branches that came close to minority neighborhoods they would make sure a loan officer wasn’t present. Oh you want to apply? Well you need to go downtown and talk to Mr. Johnson after 2pm on Thursday but make sure you get an appointment through his secretary first.

UT Faculty are concerned.
